SECTION 2 - PAtifc 2 - PLAINDEALER-HERALD. FRIDAY. APRIL26.1985 Church National Day of Prayer Sponsor mission benefit President Reagan has proclaimed May 2, as National Day of Prayer. The National ttieme for this year's Day of Prayer is "Take 5 at 12." Americans are encouraged to call upon the Lord for at least five minutes at noon and to encourage other people to pray. "We can give thanks to God for the ever-increasing abun dance He has bestowed on us, and we can remember all those in our society who are in need of help, whether it be material assistance in the form of charity or simply a friendly word of encouragement. We are all God's handiwork, and it is ap propriate for us as individuals and as a nation to call to Him in prayer," proclaimed President Reagan. Chain O' Lakes Covenant Church will participate in ob servance of the day with a Prayer Service at the church, 4815 N. Wilmot Rd., Johnsburg. Many area churches will par ticipate in this service with the Reverend Eric Snyder of Faith Presbyterian Church sharing the message of the day. A continental breakfast will be served by the Covenant Women at 10 a.m. and the service will begin at 10:45 a.m., concluding around 11:30. Babysitting will be provided at the church and an offering taken at the service for FISH. The public is invited and encouraged to participate on this National Day of Prayer by attending the activities planned. April 28 worship services led by On Sunday, April 28, Shepherd of the Hills Sunday School will sponsor a collection drive to benefit Lutheran Family Mission. Tlie Chicago area children served by the mission are forced to huddle under blankets for warmth because of gas and utility cut-offs. Threat of fires adds stress to families living by candlelight. Mothers must choose between rent, utilities, and food for their children-not an easy task. Children wearing senior high youth &K Workshop on teens slated Lake Presbyterian Church will lead worship, Sunday, April 28, at 8:30 and 11 a.m. Both services will be conducted entirely by the youth, including music and scripture readings. The focus of the services will be a series of biblical skits, entitled "Through the Eyes of the People." Each skit is one episode of Christ's ministry, taken from John's gospel. All are invited to attend either worship service and experience these modern and interpretive messages of Chirst's work. The church is located at 8506 Church St. in Ridgefield. rROreSSKmT SF.RVICF. Lutheran Family Mission attempts to meet the needs of these struggling families, but they cannot do It alone. The Sunday School will accept non-perishable food, blankets, warm outer clothing, clothes in good condition and money for this mission's need. All donations can be brought to Shepherd of the Hills, 404 N. Green Street the 28th. Called "one of the top collegiate jazz bands in the nation" by such jazz greats as Dizzy Gillespie and the late Duke Ellington, the Northern Illinois University Jazz En semble will bring the talents of its 20 student members to the Woodstock Opera House on Friday, May 3 at 8 p.m. The event is a special bonus concert in the Spring Music series of the Woodstock Fine Arts Association. Under the direction of Hon Modell, the group has won significant recognition from Downbeat Magazine's Student Recording Awards (Dee-Bee), has won two Chicago Emmys and was featured in a one-hour PBS special called "A Year in the Life of the Greatest Jazz Band in America." Last summer the group made its first appearance abroad. The 18-day tour included per formances at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland and the North Sea Jazz Festival in the Netherlands. The key to such recognition is the musical versatility and creativity of the students. Half of the ensemble's music is written and arranged by the members themselves. From a modest beginning in 1969, convincing evidence of the growth and maturity of the ensemble can be found in the number and stature of artists who have appeared with them in concert, clinic and recording sessions: Gillespie, Bellson, Arnie Lawrence, Marvin Stamm, Marian McPartland, Frank Eossline, Carl Fontana and many more. And the list is still growing. Tickets are $7 and may be purchased at the box office. A box supper will be offered for $5 by reservation only. County note cards are available Residents may now buy "Four Seasons in McHenry County" notecards at several locations in McHenry County. The notecards, printed on 100 percent recycled paper and backed by the McHeniy County Defenders, feature pen and ink drawings by local artist Jim Pearson of summer, fall, winter, and spring scenes at different natural areas in McHenry County.
