Dunne, Warriors rip South Coming off a tough loss to Fox Valley Conference leader Woodstock Friday, one could have understood if McHenry's baseball team had suffered a letdown Monday against Crystal Lake South. 1 Unfortunately for the Gators, there was no such thing, as the Warriors improved to 7-7 in the league, 11-8 overall. Senior Pat Dunne hurled a complete game - the fourth consecutive one for McHenry - as the Warriors tripped South 7-4 at McCracken Field. Dunne (3-2) allowed just five hits, while striking out six and giving up three earned runs. The right-hander also had two hits, including a double, to help the Warrior offense. South Jumped all over Dunne in the first inning, scoring all four of its runs. But they wouldn't touch him after that, as the Warriors scored four times in the bottom of the sixth to claim the FVC win. The Warriors have won five of their last six games. "It's nice to have our guys going the distance. Our pitching and fielding has been very consistent of late. Hitting has been on-and-off, though," said McHenry coach Brian Wilson. FVC Baseball "Pat had a rough start because the umpire was 40 minutes late. Pat was warmed up and ready, and then he had to wait. It took him a while to get going again," Wilson said. The Gators collected, of their five hits in the first inning, but after that, Dunne got stronger, mowing down 12 of the last 113 Gators who stepped to the plate. "He pitched real well," said Wilson. "He's been coming around lately." Mike Schultz, who went 3-for-4 in the game, singled in Dunne and Steve Hutt for the first two McHenry runs in the second. With the locals trailing 4-3 in the s sixth, Dunne led off with a double. After Bob Nolan walked, Brad Snyder singled to score Dunne. Jeff Schuster then singled to load the bases, and Craig Hill's suicide squeeze scored Nolan with the eventual winning run. Steve Cunningham then doubled to put the game on ice. "Our bats are coming around," said Wilson. "I hope we can keep it up." Woodstock 3, McHenry 2 The Blue Streaks held their firm grasp o on the FVC lead by edging the Warriors Friday at McCracken Field. Schuster pitched a strong game, going the distance as Woodstock could muster just five hits. The WaFFiors, however, could get only four off winning pitcher Bob Botts. Cunningham walked and came around on consecutive passed balls to score the first Warrior run in the sixth, and Snyder doubled and scored on a Scnultz single in the seventh. Woodstock scored all three runs in the third on just one hit, a double by Tony Dello. "We've been playing fairly solid of late," said Wilson. "We know w we can play with Woodstock, there's no question about that. "We want to finish up strong, and get ready for the regionals." McHenry will finish a previously-suspended game with Jacobs prior to the regularly-scheduled contest, Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Mc Cracken Field. Crystal Lake Central will come to town Friday, before McHenry finishes up at Dundee-Crown Monday. GOODfVEAR "AUTO TECH CENTERS" 4400 W. Smith kicked things off with a 6-2, 6-0 trouncing of John Hared at No. 1. Wrona recovered from his illness to down Ben Andrew at No. 2, 6-0, 7-6. At third singles, Etheridge ripped Scott Matuia 6-2, 6-1. Weidemann and Strom smothered Dan Gaschler and Jeff Smith 6-0, 6-1. Gray and Miller suffered the only Warrior loss of the day, falling to Tim Yoho and Chris Nikaloau 7-6, 6-1. "We're just looking for good weather to practice in this week," said Gray. "I think we have a good chance at sec tionals, a good shot for Gary and Randy to go downstate. South's team is tough, but our guys won more games off them (Dagley and Foley) than anybody eise at conference. "It depends on how the seeding goes. We could get Gary and Randy seeded second, which would put them in the opposite bracket from South's guys. Cary-Grove's No. 1 team is tough, too." The winning team and the top two finishers in each of three singles and two doubles categories will advance to the state meet, to be held at Arlington Heights Hersey May 23-25.
