Lake Renwick, according to a spokesman for the Audubon group, is the only known nesting area in Illinois for cattle egrets. Black crowned night herons, great blue herons, and great herons are also known to nest here. Snowy egrets are often seen in this area, too. In ad dition, little blue herons, yellow crowned night herons and white pelicans have been seen here on occasion. The group, under the leadership of Craig Miller (312- 668-2403) will meet at the lake at 9 a.m. There is no parking lot, but there will be room to pull off the road and park. Spotting scopes will prove beneficial as the nests are some distance from the shore. To reach Lake Renwick, take Route 59 south to Plainfield. Turn southeast on Route 30 and proceed for about three miles. The lake is on the northeast side of the road. Should you come to the intersection with Lake Renwick Road, you have passed the lake by a short distance, according to Miller. After a short time spent here, the group will continue on to Goose Lake Prairie. This prairie, near Morris, and about 25 miles from Lake Renwick, should offer in addition to a wealth of prairie plants, Bell's vireos, Henslow sparrows and sedge wrens. Since Goose Lake Prairie is a wet prairie, king rails and other marsh birds can be expected, too. Picnic facilities are available at Goose Lake. Members should bring a lunch to be eaten there. Membership in Audubon is not necessary for participation in its field trip. To attend the trip call Miller at (312) 658-2403. Hie class, which is normally scheduled for July, is being given early to accomodate vacation schedules to insure that the siblings have the best possible class.
