ELM STREET (RTE. 120) McHENRY, III m. m --» jh a mm . a Lakemoor-Lilymoor: Lilymoor's landmark 'castle' is just another memory Tuesday morning, June 25, the sky was a strange blaze of bronze as seen from the south west side of Lilv I^ake The crackling sound that can bring terror to the hearts of those close by, was heard across the lake. Trie outline of the tower on the old Seiffert property was visible, but all else seemed to be a huge torch. Margaret Karas 385-4934 Now, all that remains of the home and grounds that had been of eye-catching interest to passersby and residents since the late 1920s, is the tower and the foundation still guarded by faithful lions, plus some statuary including the fountain and headless horseman who lost not only his head but his dog companion as well. The homes on either side were saved by the excellent work of firemen of the McHenry fire companies, Fox Lake and Wauconda. The intervening trees were sprayed with water which kept tne fire from spreading. Louise and Don Hipwell, living in the next home to the east, were awakened by the light, crackling sound of burning timbers and acrid smell of smoke. It was terrifying, not knowing whether they too would lose then* home to a fire that had no way of starting except by arson. And Mrs. Maass to the west of the burning structure, too, was terrified throughout the whole time. The fire was still smoldering two days later. The smoke was a health problem for Louise, almost causing her to be hospitalized. Oxygen at home helped and she is now able to be up and out Driving or walking past the now almost vacant area leaves'a feeling of loss. The landmark built by the Seifferts is how a memory to be seen only through old pictures. MORE EXCITEMENT The police siren wailed down Lily Lake Road last Tuesday about 2:45 a.m. When the sound stopped abruptly near our home, it was panic time as to what had happened. Seeing the revolving lights across the street, and armed with a flashlight, I went out to investigate. A young man speeding north on Lily Lake Road with an officer in pursuit, turned sharply onto Stueben Road, hit a railroad tie in the median strip, swerved shaiply and was stopped by another railroad tie that was protecting the south boundary of the Monahan home. The barefoot driver was abusive to the officer, so a backup squad was requested and came. The young man was controlled by the use of hand cuffs, which didn't prevent his wiping his dirty feet on the of ficer's jacket in the squad car. Such patience our officers have. And the indignities we expect them to endure in order to preserve law and order. GRANDFATHER WEDS The Collins family of Lilymoor spent an exciting weekend in Dubuque, Iowa, when family members gathered for grand father's third marriage. Mother Marcia drove with her sister Janice, sons Shawn and Mark, two dogs and one cat, while Wendy and brother Michael went both ways by bus. The family enjoyed meeting new grandmother, visiting with old ing new ones, s that Dubuque gr< Friends and maki Wendy still thinks is a long distance by a bus. FAREWELL Marie Thomas, the gracious lady who had lived on the east side of Lily Lake many years ago, and who has limitless friends in the area left for California. Her health is the reason for the move, as our climate has caused problems. Marie has been an en couragement to many and her musial abilities has given much easure for years. Among ends who will be missing her calls and visits is Myldred Rowe next door neighbor to Marie before her home was destroyed by fire. Best wishes for good health and happiness go to this dear lady in her new home in California.
