Tom Selleck's sidekick on the popular "Magnum, P.I.," has always had an entrepreneurial streak. "I went to college one year, but t just wasn't inter ested Even while I was in school. I had ousinesses that I started, like snow removal businesses, con crete businesses. . ." He's recently been using some of those entrepreneu rial skills to set up his own production company. "My reasoning is I don't want to be at the mercy of people -- waiting for a telephone call I think if you wanna go' anywhere, you've really gotta do it yourself" "I've got research on Henry Ford that I want put into script form and hope to do as a miniseries. and I'm in the process now of developing a show called Titanic Thompson' I've also got a western that I wanna put together. I think westerns are gonna come back." Manetti may have inherit ed some of his entrepreneurial skill from his father, a Chicago plas tics manufacturer "My father started the company around 1948 He used to manufacture toys. One of them'was a plastic chicken that you pushed it down and it laid a marble egg I'm senous " Manetti was bitten by the acting bug in 1970 when he did-a commercial 'or Ur*.it«»ci Airlines called "Five Seats Across." "I didn't say anything in the commercial I just sat there. And it paid pretty good And then when I found out what it was like and that you had to walk and talk too. I went to school to learn how to act so I could do commercials Then I became interested and started doing theater and stuff." But gelling the commer cial in the first place was a lucky break "The reason I got the commercial was because l wasn't a big guy United's gonna hate this, but they wanted a smaH guy who would fit in the chair and make the chair took real big That's exactly what did it l remember !h« guy saying to me. 'Just 'ememoer. what's-your- name the chair is the star, you're nothing You sit in ;r>e middle ot the chair and look shriveled up.' " C iM5 Compuioc
