Kathleen Turner. Robert Loggia. # # By J T. YURKO The lilm season is only hall over, but "Pnzzi's Honor" has to be the offbeat movie of the year. To describe what it is like would take more room than we have here, so perhaps it's bet­ ter to start oil with what it's not. Although the lilm is set in the world of organized crime in New York City about 10 years ago. it really isn't a gangster lilm. Although it begins with a gangland wedding, it isn't a spoof ol Francis Coppola's "Godfather" films. Although Jack Nicholson and Kathleen Turner have a rather bizarre love affair, it isn't a love story. And although some ol the action is very violent, many of the scenes are hilariously funny. Nicholson, in one of his fin­ est performances ever, plays a Brooklyn hit-man for the mob -- kind of a cross between a young Vito Corieone and a Damon Runyon character. At the wedding of the Don's granddaughter, he spots a lovely young lady (Kathleen Turner) who is also a hit- woman From here, relation­ ships intertwine, identities are mistaken, and the whole thing could easily play as a frothy French farce, were it not for the rather gruesome murders. Veteran director John Hus­ ton has never been afraid to take chances with his films, and this may be his biggest gamble yet. For instance, the profession (paid assassin) of the two lead characters is hardly likely to win our sympa­ thy. But Huston's light-but- never-silly touch, and Nichol­ son's superb performance actually make us sympathize with the gangland murderer. Part of that is due to Kath­ leen Turner's equally fine per­ formance as the shapely half of the murder-for-hire pair. The audience is never quite sure about her character, and part of the appeal of the film is watching how our sympathies switch back an<t forth between Nicholson and Miss Turner, as the two sink deeper and deep­ er into foul play. And what an ending! It may leave you bewildered, grossed- out, motionless or emotionless, but then again, that's what you expect from an offbeat movie. (e) 1915 Compulog 4450 W. BULL VALLEY RD.
