Hot weather, kids out of school, baseball, and a thousand other signs tell us it is sum mertime once again. Un fortunately, the presence of various insect pests in and around the home is another sign of summer. Ants, earwigs, centipedes, millipedes, and spiders are all frequent unin vited guests during the summer months. There are a wide variety of ants that frequently enter homes. They may be winged or wingless and can vary in size and color. Usually they will nest in soil near the house and enter in search of food. In most cases, 'eliminating the source of food will eliminate the ants. Large black or black and red ants may be carpenter ants, which do not actually eat wood, but nest in it. They perfer to nest in wood with high moisture content such as rotting wood on large shade trees or old stumps. However, they occasionally nest in structures which have water- soaked areas, such as from leaky roofs or drain pipes. Since carpenter ants prefer moisture, they are often seen in bathrooms or around sinks. If you've been seeing them indoors all year, chances are the nest is inside; whereas if they appear only in warm weather, they are probably just wandering in from an outside source. For all types of ants, the best control measure to keep them out of the house is to spray the foundation and adjoining 12 inch band of soil with dTiasinon (Spectracide). Dilute the liquid concentrate as directed on the lable and spray to a point of runoff. Indoors, apply ready to- use sprays (no mixing required) containing diazinon, propoxur (Baygon), or chlorpyrifos (Dursban) along baseboards, cracks, crevices, door thresholds, and other out of the way places. Earwigs have been a nuisance around McHenry County in recent years. These are 'elongate, dark colored insects with pincer-like projections on the tip of the abdomen called ierceps. Earwigs prefer moist, dark areas and are most active at night. Generally, earwigs are scavengers but may occasionaly damage bedding plants or vegetables. Treat soil with diazinon (as for ants) to keep them out of the house apply carbaryl (Sevin) to protect plants. Earwigs are often found in cracks in trees, but do not damage trees. Centipedes are flattened, elongate pests with many body segments and legs. They tend to hide in debris and move rapidly when disturbed. A foundation spray and indoor sprays as Ustea above for ant control will control centipedes. Also, pHmiimting insects and spiders (often found in debris) will reduce centipede number because these are food sources. Finally , millipedes are worm like, hard shell creatures with many legs. Millipedes tend to curl up when disturbed. For additional information, contact the McHenry Count Office at 789 McHenry Ave. P.O.Box 431, Woodstock, Illinois 60098. Phones (815) 338-3737 and 338-4747.
