v \ Friday, July 12,1985 Section C Sports cars are affordable again Experts disagree as to the reason for the disap pearance of the affordable sports car for more than a decade according to a recent article in the Wall Street Journal. Some blame the rising gas prices of the 1970s. "Everything was econo- boxes," says Warren C. Christell, vice president of marketing for Toyota. "All the talk was how far can you go on a tank of gas." * Others maintain that auto makers overreacted to the rise in gas prices. "It wasn't the market that went away and came back/' says Michael J. Bennett, marketing director of Reliant, "it was the vehicles that left America." Either way, everyone agrees that the recent stablizing of gas prices has, as Toyota's Mr. Christell puts it, "really freed up the psyche. Now everyone says, *1 want to have fun." ' Up until recently, the sleek Pontiac Fiero and the chunky but speedier Honda CRX have met the demand for an affordable two-seat sports car. Auto makers had long thought the entire market could only bear 125,000 such cars a year. But in 1964, Pontiac sold 100,000 Fieros, three times more than early estimates, and the CRX sold half that number. The market for two-seaters is expected to ex pand to as many as 500,000 a year by the end of the decade. One reason is that about half the cars are sold to single people. Families with several drivers are also attracted to two-seaters as a se cond or third car. So two-seaters can serve two purposes for manufacturers: they can get entry- level buyers, and they can hold on to older ones. The auto makers are aware there's no guarantee that demand for two-seaters will hold up. Hon da's Jerry Bengston warns, "Inject fuel economy back into the picture, and all these could go the way of the dinosaur." -v-r "i-V \v \ ; \ \ x-\ I"- !-R= •NEW" 85 CHEVETTE DOWN PER * MONTH NEW 1985 CAVALIER full factory \ 1 equipment Wwllli ONLY •141" PER MONTH % A.P.R.
