Pag* 2 NORTHWEST HERALD Section C Friday, July 12, IMS International 'Big Three' possible in next decade Domestic automakers are link ing up with foreign manufacturers at a pace that could consolidate car companies into a few interna tional firms within 10 years. According to senior economist John Hammond of Data Resources Inc., "There will be 25 names, but the linkage will in ef fect create three or four com- panies. It will probably take five to 10 years before all lines become clearly visible." These links are nothing new; many began during the 1979 energy crisis and have increased during recessions. "Everyone has an advantage in some areas such as production, distribution or marketing," Hammond added. For example, the GM-Toyota Joint-manufacturing venture in Fremont, Calif., is a mutually beneficial situation. Until recent-, ly, Toyota was limited by import restraints, and GM had a manufacturing-cost problem and a vacant plant. Toyota guarantees substantial growth, GM learns manufacturing techniques, and a strong link is in place. Cost is another consideration. Domestic and foreign carmakers can keep production costs down by working together on development and manufacturing, and then marketing separately. Even with three or four super firms, concludes Hammond, "there will still be some specialty manufacturers such as Mercedes- Benz and Jaguar." IZnruH'lVUSH IS AfJ zo ANTIQUE <D Cadillac, Italian style *> Americans' growing taste for European luxury cars has helped create what John 0. Gret- tenberger, Cadillac general manager, calls "small pockets of opportunity born of the splintering effect of precise taste." In an effort to capture part of that market, General Motors Cor poration's Cadillac division in Detroit is working with Pinin- farina S.p.A. of Italy on their new Allante coupe. Pininfarina will provide Cadillac with 7,000 Italian- designed Allante bodies a year; Cadillac will install the engines. The Allante, which is expected to be available in 1967, is a sporty two-seater estimated to cost more than $40,000 -- a price that makes it an "ultra-luxury" auto. The image of Italy fits a niche. Cadillac has planned this line to compete with other luxury vehicles vehicles created in Europe. BMW, Sab and Mercedes, for example, have increased their share in the U.S. luxury market from 21 percent to 35 percent in the last five years, and Cadillac hdpes to help meet the demand created by "aspirational, am bitious and athletic yuppies," con tinued Grettenberger. "The Italians do very good things -- not radical, but long- lived, classic things. With the Allante, we are looking for a car that can put a lasting halo around our whole production line," he ad ded. If you'v* had your car for 25 years, it it officially an antique and qualifies for special license plates. ̂ Sales of service contracts up Most car buyers think of options as being sunroofs, air conditioning and power windows. But one of the hot test-selling automobile options these days is the extended-service contract. A "Wall Street Journal" article reports that contracts are price from $175 to $1,365 and cover me chanical breakdowns long after the manufacturer's warranty expires. "What people are doing is paying several hundred dollars up front for some service they may or may not need a few years down the road," said John Fobian, director of engi neering for the American Automo bile Association. "It 's like insurance." Oen of the main reasons this busi ness has grown is because car own ers are keeping their cars for longer periods than ever before, which means the cars are more likely to face costly breakdowns. Sales rise in March The domestic auto industry sold 193,625 cars through early March, up 3.1 percent from last year. The seasonally-adjusted annual selling rate is 8.4 million units. Ac cording to market-share figures from "The Wall Street Journal," General Motors leads with 53.5 per cent, followed by Ford Motor Co. (27.6), and Chrysler (14.7). Ameri can Honda holds the next highes market share with 2.3 percent with American Motors holding 1.4 and Volkswagen coming in with 0.5 percent. AREA AUTHORIZED NEW CAR DEALERS There are about 100 companies (including the Big Three auto mak ers) that offer contracts through dealerships. Many dealers feel ex tended-service contracts help them develop stronger relationships with customers. According to Jim Caplinger, own er of a Chrysler/Chevrolet/Oldsmo- bile dealership in Arkansas, a cus tomer is a lot more willing to have all the necessary work done when the car is covered by an extended- service contract: "It's a way we can build a good relationship with customers so they keep coming back." AMERICANS LOVE LUXURY According to a recent article in "USA Today," the luxury-car mar ket is reaching the middle of what is expected to be a nine-year boom. Sales of luxury cars (loosely de fined as cars ranging in price from $17,000 to $57,000) began to take off when the recession and enery con cerns faded in 1981, and boom sales are expected to continue as Yuppies climb the professional ladder. Luxury cars represent status, and according to Ford Motor Co. econo mist L. Raymond Windecker, "Lux ury cars provide a sense of econom ic security. All's well with doctors, lawyers and basketball players." To meet the growing demand, Mercedes and Lincoln are adding production capacity. Honda Motor Company is also working with Aus tin Rover Ltd. of England to create a luxury, executive-style car. No details have been release on the vehicle, but marketing plans for the U.S. will be released shortly.
