July 12,1W5 Page 3 LEESBURG, Va. - Beepers aren't just for professional people anymore. Service customers at Leesburg AMC/Jeep/Renault in the shadow of the nation's capital don't leave the dealership without one of the electronic paging devices. Gary Cohen, dealership president, decided to start using beepers so the service department would have almost immediate contact with customers who leave their vehicles for service. He provides each customer with a Metrocall beeper to keep for as long as the vehicle is in the shop for service. The beeper enables the service department to contact an owner quickly if the work will take longer than expected or if the cost will exceed the estimate. Cohen said the beeper service has been very well received since it was initiated on May 1. "Customer satisfaction is probably more important in our industry today than at any other time in the past 50 years because the buyer has an ever-increasing number of domestic and Imported products to choose from," Cohen said. "If a customer has an unpleasant experience in your service department, your chances for a repeat sale usually disappears," he said. "By using the beepers, we've been able to keep customers informed almost up-to-the-minute on the status of maintenance or repairs, and thus avoid potential annoyances." Cohen said beepers also save time- for service department personnel by reducing to one the number of calls needed to contact a customer. In addition to use of beepers, the dealership attaches a reply card to every repair order so the customer can evaluate the service experience. And, as a final avenue of communication, the dealership holds a unique "open house" every three months at which customers are invited to ask questions about their vehicles and to offer suggestions about service.
