WmmlimiM: K S T K U ^ SHULTS AUTO SALES ANNOUNCES "WE'RE CHEAPER" AND WE'LL PROVE IT Mini craze increasing With the introduction of the Chrysler Corp. mini-van in 1963, the nation has gone mini-crazy. The ap peal is based on many qualities, including better mileage at a lower cost than other vans and truck-like vehicles. For example, a Dodge Caravan gets an estimated 19 miles to the gallon and costs approximately 914,900. In contrast, the 4x4 Ram Charger gets just 11 miles to the gallon and costs 917,153, while a 12- passenger Chrysler B-350 van gets 10 miles and costs 919,067. With each of the three large American auto corporations trying to find their niche in the mini-van market, analysis predict possible price cuts hitting the market around year's end. With Chrysler having the clear jump, their appeal is aimed toward young families -- particularly women. Their models have eliminated the steep step up which is common in pickup trucks and larger vans, and front-wheel drive with a K-car platform help produce car-like handling with bet ter traction. GM, on the other hand, is in favor or reaching the commercial mar ket. Its Astro models are heavier and have less traction than the Chrysler Caravan. While trying tb compete with small delivery trucks which don't even offer passenger seating, GM would also like tp ap peal to consumers who need a heavier vehicle to haul boats or campers. Ford is trying to "carve out the middle ground." The last company to reveal their mini-van, the Aeros- tar is equipped with rear-wheel drive. The Aerostar also features low step-in height, but can tow and haul heavier loads -- and is still smaller than GM's models. With the boom continuing, Ford Is counting on its brand-name loyalty to help it catch up in the mini-van race. With a market that could top one million in sales by 1990, the mini-van appears to have become a durable and functional vehicle that fits today's lifestyle. U.S. leasing more vehicles All across the United States, con sumers are driving out of the auto showrooms in new cars they don't own. Leasing cars for personal use is a phenomenon that presents dra matic impact on the growth poten tial of the auto industry. Alttniigi kaeft* began ta toe 1940% by the e&fy 1970s it still ac counted for a very small percentage of cars on U.S. roads. Leasing ap pealed primarily to business and professional people who could write off the cost as a business investment. During the last decade, however, it is estimated that nearly 25 per cent of the cars on U.S. roads were leased, with most of this increase ' coining from cars leased for person al use. It is estimated that by 1990, 40 percent of all cars on the road will be leased. Why such a dramatic increase? The basic answer is economics. A compact car that cost $3,000 in 1971 now costs close to $10,000. In addi tion to increased price, the average down payment in 1971 was 10 per- i cent. Current down payments have Increased nationally from 20 to 30 percent on new cars. This means that auto buyers are faced with higher prices, higher down pay ments, and often higher loan pay ments each month. People are attracted to leasing for othe* reasons as well. Retirees lease because they like -the conve nience, while for Yuppies, leasing keeps their finances as fluid as their lifestyles. They can enjoy new cars on a regular basis plus fulfill other material desires. Business people look to leasing for simplified record keeping and potential tax benefits. , Women choose 4-wheet drives Women are quickly becoming a major influence in what has beat traditionally seen as a male do main, according to a recent article in " Automitive News." American Motors attributes 40 percent of all Jeep four-wheel drive sales to women, and has commis sioned a nine-member, female task force to study the needs of this segment. < Women buy 4 WD vehicles for many reasons in the East, many women rely, on the safe handling during baa weather. On the West Coast, many women use 4WD vehi cles to drive in the open outdoor spaces. According to Thelma Sib ley, supervisor at AMC and mem ber of the task force, "It's more a convenience out in the West and a necessity in the East." The Jeep Cherokee and Wagoneer are the specific vehicles chose most frequently by women because they are the only sport-utility vehicles in their that offer four doors. Another reason attributed to their popularity is fJiat recent models (like new-car models) have been scaled down and made more fuel efficient. OVER 100 TRUCKS ON SALE!
