Pag* 14 Mc HENRY PLAlNDEALERS^ctlon A Friday, July 26,1985 Community t -• Johnsburg residents voted on school FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of July 25, 1935) Saturday night the two-day carnival will open at Spring Grove for the benefit of St. Peter's church. Games for young and old are on hand, and many beautiful and attractive prizes will be on display. An interesting feature is the fact that the site of the carnival is across from the state fish hatchery where thousands of visitors come annually to view the interesting process of hat ching and raising fish. Freak showers on Sunday brought much-needed rain to this area to relieve the drought and heat. While McHenry and vicinity received a good rain Sunday night, Volo was the scene of a heavy shower Sunday afternoon dampening the spirits of the pleasure seekers at the carnival at St. Peter's church. Less than a half mile west of Volo the pavement was dry, and not a drop of rain fell in McHenry. Ninety degree weather has prevailed for more than 10 days, but even the record high of 99 and 100 in the shade did not imperil the mark of 106 and 107 degress registered last year during the drought period. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of July 26, 1945) July 29 will be another big day for the Johnsburg community, for at that time, they will hold a wice one-day celebration which replaces their annual church carnival. In the days before rationing, St. John's parish, like most of the other hereabouts, boasted a much anticipated two- day carnival, featuring the customary festivities and highlighting a delicious chicken dinner. Proceeds from the limited celebration at Nell's ballroom this year will be used toward erecting a new parish school, the old one having burned to the ground last winter. Local servicemen discharged because they were past the preferred 18 to 26 age group included William M. Green, Capt. John Greene, Leo Heimer, Harold F. Miller, Leo Rother-* mel, Glenn Wattles and Stanley Geier. Among those with serious injuries who were returned to civilian life are LeRoy Conway, "Sonny" Smith and William E. Shoemaker. Others sent home because of illness were Edward Wiser, LeRoy Melsek, Frank Gende, Fred Kamholz and Gerald Hettermann. Dr. and Mrs. Howard S. Fike announce the birth of a daughter, born July 22, at the Woodstock hospital. She has been named Heather Ann. A 9-v* lb. daughter was born on Sunday at the Woodstock hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Smith. TWENTY FIVE YEARS AGO • (Taken from the files of July 31,1960) The first fatal accident to occur on the Fox River in McHenry County this year, other than drowning, took place July 24 taking the life of a 28- r-old Chicago man. Coroner ron J. Ehorn said death was caused by a blow on the head suffered when the man was struck by the propeller of his boat. In turning his boat to throw a tow rope to water skiing colleagues, the Chicago man was apparently thrown into the river. New' to McHenry's professional ranks is Dr. Michael Churosh, dentist, who is an associate of Dr. Leonard Pawlikowski on Green Street. A 13-year-old McHenry Junior high school student, John L. Loren Massey, fair board president, announced that the- exhibition hall has a new cement* Wright of Lakeland Shores, did , # some quick thinking last week in floor, and before the fair opens- stopping a car driven by his next week the interior and ex- grandfather, Roy Wright, 70,of Aurora, after the latter suffered a fatal heart attack as the two were driving through Yellowstone National Park. In recent weeks the McHenry County fairgrounds has been undergoing an extensive "face lifting" in preparation for the< annual fair Aug. 4 through 7. terior of the building will be painted. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of July 23, 1975) Johnsburg will hold a referendum vote Aug. 16 to decide whether School District 12 will become a unit district.
