NORTHWEST HERALD Section C Friday, July 36, IMS Pag* 5 Wheels Automobile's 100th birthday, or is it? k I f: 1 BEAULIEU, England ;*•»-- With an intentional : traffic jam and a new ; ride called "Wheels," •» Britain is throwing a I summer-long 100th : birthday party for the automobile. Other coun- \ tries have other ideas. ; So murky is the * horseless carriage's ori- : gin that its birthday is a ro l l ing occas ion. : France celebrated the car's centennial last year. West Germany . waits until next year. ; But Britain has seized • upon 1985 as "The Year of the Car," crediting Germany's Karl Benz in 1885 as "the first per son to build internal combustion vehicles for sale to the public and not purely experimental vehicles." Birthday celebrations are splashed every where -- antique cars chugging through Shakespeare country, a "Miss Motoring Godi- va" ride at Coventry, congregations of snarl ing race cars. The only permanent 100th birthday present is the Disney-style ride called "Wheels," which Prince Charles opened at Beaulieu's National Motor museum the oth er day. It whisks pas sengers in automated "pods" through the mo torcar's eventful first century in just under six minutes. One of its most strik ing animated models depicts an early auto mobile spreading ter ror, anger and destruc tion through an English village. For England didn't at first lake kindly to the car, which "frightened both people and hors es," says the National Motor museum's hand book. Many off ic ia ls saw it "as a positive threat." "Police and magis t ra tes waged a war against cars," the hand book explains. "Magistrates, horse men to the last, detest ed the noisy motors that f r ightened thei r mounts. Landowners objected tc the dust that covered their crops and they were adamant that England was not going to be turned into a honk ing, polluted, roaring racetrack " Police set up speed traps as early as 1902^-- there's nothing new un der the .sun -- hiding behind hedges with a bi cycle and a stop watch. Motoring enthusiasts counterattacked vigor ously , but f ines for speeding were huge. "I still have the police summons my father re ceived for exceeding the speed limit," said Lord Montagu of Beau- lieu at the "Wheels" opening. "He had been caught going more than 12 miles per hour." Prince Charles, too, mused in his opening speech upon the law- breaking antics of his kingly ancestors. "My great -great grandfather hated to see any car in front of his," Charles said of King Edward VII. "He would often urge his chauffeur to pursue and overtake. He boasted of attaining 60 miles per hour as early as 1906." Edward VII was taught to drive by Lord Montagu's father, who bat t led agains t En gland's early hostility to the motorcar. In his honor, Montagu dis played five antique cars in his stately home ad joining ancient Beau- lieu Abbey when he opened it to the public in 1952. The cars proved more popular than the house, and the National Motor Museum was bom. Now it's the biggest and most spectacular of Britain's 30 motor mu seums, all of which are marking the car's cen tennial in some way. It packs more than 250 historic vehicles, the oldest from 1894, into an award-winning building in the Beaulieu complex 95 miles southwest of London. Apart from it's new "Wheels" ride, howev- Frugal families save vacation money A frugal family can : discover many ways to ; cut the costs of a sum mer driving vacation, the AAA-Chicago Motor Club says. Vacationers should * plan their expenses well - ahead of time, the AAA- ;CMC says. Gas, food - and lodging will be the ' main costs, and a sensi ble budget also allows for recreation and shop ping, toll roads and emergencies. To make your vaca tion more affordable, the AAA-CMC offers these suggestions: Consider making lunch the main meal of the day, because many# restaurants have lower lunch prices. Roadside picnicking can reduce the price of eating on the run. When choosing lodg ing, ask about special deals for families, se nior citizens and chil dren. You can reduce lodging costs by making reservations well ahead of time when a greater selection of accommo dations is available. An AAA Tour book or simi lar guide can help you make a choice. Your car won't gobble gas quite as fast if it has been tuned before the trip. When packing the car, keep in mind that baggage racks rob you of gas their added w e i g h t a n d a i r resistance. Practice fuel efficient driving techniques, in cluding steady speeds, gradual acceleration and braking, and mini mum idling time. Plan to eat your meals dur ing rush hours to avoid stop-and-go traffic. When sightseeing, be wary of tourist traps. Save money for the in teresting and enjoyable attractions. Avoid shop ping at the high-priced stores in airports and hotels, and be sure to pack all the medicines, personal items and clothing that you need so you don't have to spend money on some thing you already have. 815455-4330 HOURS: INM.-Fri.9-9 Sat. 94, ClM«d Sun. There's nothing somber about its party. "We're shutting down the whole city center -- again -- for the world's bigges t Mini t raf f ic jam," said organizer Martin Hone. Divers of the tiny Mini. Britain's most popular and origi nal small car, are invit ed to jam Coventry solid. Since Coventry is Lady Godiva's home town, i&s emulating her famous r ide wi th a "Miss Motoring Godi- va" contest - "with good tas te and. we hope, some humor." Hone said. Another of its every- weekend events is an American Car Club ral ly on Aug. 18. with some 500 American cars breaking British law by driving on the right- hand side of the road. "It's the first time any British city has ever done that," Hone said. And there are rallies f o r J a g u a r a n d Porsche, parades of pre-1914 "veteran" cars and spectaculars lead ing to a grand finale Oct. 13. Crane applauds proposal to revise CAFE standards Twelf th Dis t r ic t Congressman Philip M. Crane recently ap plauded Transporta- t i o n S e c r e t a r y El izabeth Hanford Dole and the National Highway Traffic Safe ty Administration for proposing to revise the Corporate Average F u e l E c o n o m y (CAFE) standards for 1986 model year passenger cars from 27 5 miles per gallon to 26.0 mpg. The Illinois Con gressman noted he had suggested such action last March in a letter to Secretary Dole in which he urged the secretary to exercise the depar tment ' s authority to reduce the CAFE standards. At that time, he declared a reduction in the stan dards to a realistically achievable level was urgently needed. Congressman Crane sa id a number of domestic automobile manufacturers a re h a v i n g t r o u b l e meeting the 27.5 mpg standard and are thus faced with the pro spect of either paying enormous fines or hav ing to limit the produc tion of their larger, family-sized cars. He a lso repor ted a Department of Com merce study revealed that a GM-Ford cut back in large cars could lead to a loss of 110,000 jobs. Congressman Crane believes that with the f ierce compet i t ion f r o m i m p o r t e d automobiles, it would be d isas t rous to penal ize or force reduced production of our rebounding auto industry at this time.
