YURKO Ciinl Eastwood was rescued from obscurity by a relatively unknown Italian director named Sergio Leone. The three films Leone and East­ wood made together -- "A Fistful of Dollars." "For a Few Dollars More" and "The Good, the Bad. and the Ugly." turned Eastwood into a major star and Leone into a world- renowned director. In those Mms. Eastwood played a drifter, a man with no name who usually let his guns do the talking. Those films launched his hugely successful Hollywood career, and he recently has been able to make his own movies He has directed 11 of them, including "Pale Rider." Here Eastwood returns to his classic role as a drifter with no name. But instead ol a gun belt around his waist, he wears a preacher's collar around his neck. Like some of Leone's work "Pale Rider" is a bare- bones plot set up as a frame­ work for the action and little else. There's the good" (Eastwood and the smaii band of miners working the«r claims), the "bad" (the owner of a large nwronjj operation frying to drive the independ­ ents off their land), and the "ugly" (a hired gun and his henchman sent to destroy the miners). But Leone had style. v and Eastwood has made a film so devoid of style that It's a won­ der that it works as well as it does It's the good guys against the bad guys -- noth­ ing more. <^s a preacher who walks into the valley of the shadow of death. Eastwood emphasizes the word shadow. Director of cinematography Bruce Surtees has emphasized the high con­ trasts of shadow and light, and has used little if any artificial lighting. The indoor scenes are nearly pitch black, and Eastwood's face is in shadow throughout most of the film. Comparisons with "Shane" are unavoidable, but they are not really accurate.
