The SJJ- engine, high performance automobile de- 1 is the prototype for a sports car line that signed in the tradition of the European John Guanci of Woodstock hopes to have Grand Touring cars, but is actually being geared up for production by 1986. Something new Introducing the SJJ-1 by Guanci By Mark Smith Herald staff writer A lone businessman setting out to design, build and sell his own line of sports car. It calls to mind the recent failed attempt by John DeLorean. In Woodstock, however, there is a man at tempting to do just that. John Guanci, with his two seat, mid-engine sports car, the SJJ-1, is trying to establish his own car manufacturing company. For the past eight and a half years Guanci has been working to develop and perfect an Ameri can-made sports car that could compete with the European Grand Touring cars. He started a new company, Guanci Automobiles, Inc., seper- ate from Precision Quincy Corporation, the oth er company he owns that makes industrial ovens, and hired experts in the field to help him design the new car. The 44 year old now believes he will finally be ready to show his car to dealers this fall. Despite this major investment of time, Guanci said he is not what most people would consider a stereotypical car nut. He never took an automo tive class in school and doesn't spend every free minute working on his personal car. "I send my car to a garage if it needs work done," Guanci said. "I do know what I want in a car in handling, design, performance, etc., though." Guanci said that while he had to have a "fire in the belly" to devote so much to a project like this, he really started out for business reasons. "It's the kind of an idea that was one, excit ing, two, challenging and three, would test my self," he explained. "No one has done this successfully." Guanci said he doesn't have any delusions about his chances for success and is trying not to get caqght up in the glamour and mystique of the business. He has been focusing his attention, instead, on trying to overcome the problems that have arisen and has gone into the project with his eyes open. The car Guanci has come up with is not completely original. Certain basic parts have been borrowed from the bigger manufacturers, but Guanci said he stiU considers it to be an original car, different from the replicas and kit cars that other makers offer. "We didn't try to re-invent the wheel at every step," he explained.
