EFI V6 If it feels like a V8- smooth with plenty of power -- it's Chevy's landmark engine, the completely new 4.3 Liter EFI V6. It's a V6 that rivals V8 per­ formance with its 130 iiot jepower rating and it's standard in the Caprice, Monte Carlo andElCamino. T h i s new fue l - injected power plant is an unabashed effort by Chevrolet to give dyed- in-the wool V8 lovers one less reason to pass up the V6's superior fuel economy. /A demonstration of its power is its use in the Caprice whose standard 3.8L V6 with an automatic 3-speed transmission in 1984 moved the model from zero to 60 miles per hour in 16 seconds; the 1985's 4.3L V6 with the av a i l ab l e 4 - speed automatic takes just 13.3 seconds -- 2.7 seconds faster than the smaller V6 and only 2.2 seconds behind the available 5.0LV8. 2.8LMFIV6 Chevy buyers will be spotting the MFI logo on Celebrity, Camaro, C i t a t i on I I and Cavalier (the first time anything but a four has been offered in Cavalier) in 1985. The 2.8L MFI V6 is standard on Camaro Berlinetta and the new Cavalier Z24 Sports package and optional on Citation II, Celebri­ t y , Ca maro S po r t Coupe and Cavalier. 5.0LV8 Thirty years after American motorists began to realize it was something special, Chevrolet's ageless sma l l -b lock ca r ­ bureted V8 is refined for better economy and even g r ea t e r horsepower. This improved 5.0 Liter V8, with increas­ ed compression ratio and the addition of electronic spark con­ trol, is standard in Caprice Classic wagon and Camaro Z28 and o p t i o n a l i n o the r Cap r i ce mode l s , Monte Carlo, Camaro Spo r t Coupe and Berlinetta. A high out­ put version is standard with the Monte Carlo SS. For pure sizzling, r aw pow e r , t he C am ar o" Z28 p e r ­ formance engine is the 5.0L TPI (tuned port fuel injection) V8. In the TPI engine, in­ dividually tuned run­ ners channel the in­ coming air. to each c y l i n d e r a n d computer-controlled port fuel injectors sup­ ply a precise amount of fuel to provide the optimum air/fuel ratio for all operating condi­ tions. The result is more t o r q u e , m o r e horsepower and more guts -- in the limited production-line IROC- Z, 0-to-60 mph is clock­ ed in the 7-second range and the quarter- mi l e i n abou t 1 5 seconds. Three 5.0L V8s are available in the IROC- Z (named for the Camaros that run in the International Race of Champions): • A carbureted 5.0L V 8 w i th 5 - speed manual transmission standard, with 4-speed overdrive automatic available as an option. • A carbureted high- output 5.0L V8 with a 5- speed manual. • A 5.0L TPI V8 with a 4-speed overdrive automatic. 5.7LTPIV8 The big news for '85 in the Corvette is the new 5.7L tuned port in- j e c t i on (TPI ) V 8 power plant. At a rated 230 horsepower, it's in­ creased 12 percent over last year's "Cross Fire Injection" V8 engine and peak tor­ que is increased from 2901b./ft. to3301b./ft. It all adds up to a 0- t o -60 mph pe r ­ f o rmance im­ provement of up to 17 percent and a 12.5 per­ cent increase in EPA- estimated city fuel economy. The big difference is on the engine's top with last year's large air cleaner replaced by an e longa t ed plenum chamber from which emerge eight curved aluminum run­ ners. The air cleaner is mounted in front of the radiator and incoming air is ducted through a Bosch hot-wire mass air flow sensor and in­ to the plenum, then distributed through the runners and into t he combus t i on chambers. Tuned Port Fuel In­ jection describes the method of increasing the density of air at the i n t ake v a l v e by creating a resonant condition synchronous with the valve open­ ing. The tuned runners are designed to help the engine produce more power at lower and i n t e rmed ia t e rpms -- similar to the principle reflected in t he t a l l s t a cks mounted atop many race engines. 4.3L "Vortec" V6 For more truck p owe r , t h e 4 .3 L "Vortec" V6 provides t he h i ghes t - r a t ed horsepower and the highest-rated torque for any standard V6 in the industry. It is the standard power plant on Chevy's full-sized Pickups and Vans and the optional power plant on the Chevrolet Astro van. Th i s na tu r a l l y aspirated 90° V6 is equipped with a 4- barrel carburetor that has improved mixing of fuel and air as a result of its swirl-port induction system and more complete fuel burning due to the cen­ tralized spark plug combustion chamber.
