McHENRY PLAINDEALER Section A Wednesday, August 14,1^85 Page 13 Sports Pack ready, but Gregg concerned By UP! VtcWatia I sports writer GREEN BAY, Wis. - The Green Bay Packers feel they are ready for a championship season but their exhibition opener against the Dallas Cowboys was a dismal repert of last year. The 27-3 loss prompted Coach Forrest Gregg to return to two-a- day practices to clean up tech niques from a game he admitted was "just poor football." Gregg is trying to avoid a re peat of the start of the 1984 sea son, when the Packers won only one of eight games. Gregg engi neered the biggest turnabout in the club's history with a 7-1 re cord the second half. He wants to carry the momentum into this year. But first the offense must get its act together. At quarterback is Lynn Dickey -- and there is no doubt he is a phenomenal long passer. In the past two years, he has amassed 7,653 yards and 57 touchdowns for the best performance in the NFC. But Dickey, who turns 36 in October, has led the Packers to only one winning season in seven years and was knocked out of six games last year. He couldn't play against Dallas in the exhibi tion opener because of back spasms. No. 2 quarterback Randy Wright gave a good performance against Dallas,.completing 7-of- 10 passes for \ 91 yards. But Wright had surgery in December to repair torn knee ligaments and limped off the field after he was hit in the second period. Quarterback Scott Brunner, who took the New York Giants to the second round df the 1981 play offs and was obtained in an off season trade with Denver, hasn't lived up to Packer expectations. In the game against Dallas, he was sacked three times and threw only 4-of-l3 for 35 yards. The Packers were impressed, however, with rookie quarter back Joe Shield, who almost pi loted the team to a touchdown in the final minutes against Dallas. The Packers still. have not heard from free agent wide re ceiver John Jefferson, but Phil lip Epps, who played behind Jef ferson the past three seasons, has emerged as a threat. Epps was a world-class sprinter at Texas Christian before joining the Packers in 1982. Epps started the last four games last year and caught 14 passes for 233 yards and three touchdowns. The Packers have one of their biggest offensive lines since the Vince Lombardi era, with a lot of hope on their No. 1 draft choice, Ken Ruettgers, a 6-foot-5, 275- p o u n d e r f r o m S o u t h e r n California. But Ruettgers missed the opening of the training camp and finally joined the Packers this week after his agent negotiated a four-year contract in the neigh borhood of $1.8 million. Running back Eddie Lee Ivery is sidelined until the regular sea son with a fractured thumb but the Packers finally settled a con tract dispute with backup full back Jessie Clark, who also missed several weeks of training. Gregg was happy with his de fense against the Cowboys but admits his offense needs work. "That's not the type of football people pay to see," he said. Female conference may admit men By United Press International CHARLESTON -- Patty Viverito, a self-described "frustrated jock," is on the verge of expanding her women-only athletic conference to include men's football teams from seven schools. Viverito is the commissioner of the Gateway Conference, which rep resents women's teams dt 10 col leges. On Aug. 21, representees of the schools will meet in St. Louis, where the conference is headquar tered, to vote on whether to repre sent football. "The proposal is already on the table and there are some good rea sons for the universities to join the Gateway," Viverito told the Mat- toon Journal Gazette in a recent interview. "First, it would be expe dient because the conference al ready exists, and second, it would be cost effective because we al ready represent the schools' wom en's teams." Gateway Conference schools are Eastern Illinois, Illinois State, Bradley, Drake, Western Illinois, Indiana State, Northern Iowa, Southwest Missouri, Southern Illi nois and Wichita State. Eastern Illinois, Western Illinois, Northern Iowa, Southwest Missouri, Southern Illinois and Illinois State have football teams seeking to join the Gateway. The Mid-Continent Conference, which represented Eastern and Western Illinois, Northern Iowa and Southwest Missouri is folding. The Missouri Valley Conference, which represented Illinois State and South ern Illinois is dropping football. Approval of seven of the 10 mem ber schools is required for the pro posal to pass. "There is one group which thinks it would be a positive move to help increase the visibility of the wom en's teams. There is another group that is against it, they are saying, 'Here we go again, competing against the men,'" Viverito said, adding a third group is "willing to sit back and see what happens." Viverito, a Chicago native and graduate of Northern Illinois Uni versity, decided to leave her job with Proctor & Gamble Co. in 1974 because she "decided there had to be more to life than selling toilet paper." "Really, I knew there had to be something more significant and I had an interest in promoting sports, especially women's sports," she said. "I'm basically just a frustrated jock. 1 went to Catholic schools which didn't even have gyms let alone any type of athletic programs. Because I never had a chance to participate in sports, I somehow al ways felt short-changed."
