Business Showcase '85--Page 17 History of Business Showcase WOODSTOCK - With two suc cessful Business Showcases as part of Woodstock's recent histo ry, the Woodstock Chamber of Commerce and Industry is look ing forward to Business Show case 1985. Some 8,000 people from Wood stock and McHenry County visit ed the county fairgrounds in Sep tember 1983 for the first Woodstock trade fair, "Business Showcase 1983 - Window on Woodstock." People were fascinated by the sights and sounds of their own community, children collected as many balloons as possible, exhib itors chatted like neighbors while exchanging information and con noisseurs nibbled on "A Taste of Woodstock." Hie fair boasted fun for the whole family, and there was something for everyone. The 95 booths in Buildings C, D and E, which were sold out well in ad vance of the fair, featured not only displays by local businesses and organizations but also exhib its by governmental units, from the City of Woodstock to the Mc Henry County Sheriffs Depart ment to School District 200. Woodstock police gave away some 4,000 pieces of material on crime prevention. There were also 500 children, up to age 16, whose parents brought them to a separate booth for the special po lice fingerprinting program. Information was available on programs of the police Crime Prevention Unit, including assist ing businessmen and the public with education about crime pre vention techniques, seminars on security surveys for business and residential property and pro grams on personal protection like "Operation Identification" for marking property and "Neigh borhood Watch" to help citizens help each other and the police. The exhibit was highlighted by a special appearance by "McGruff" the dog, the national crime prevention symbol, who was on hand to emphasize "tak ing a bite out of crime." City officials and staffers from seven city departments were available to talk with visitors to explain where the city has been and where it's going. "True to its past... confident of its future" was the overall theme of city displays. Besides the po lice, the departments of recrea tion, public works, finance and water and the Woodstock Public Library and the opera house were represented. Visitors not only had the oppor tunity to ask questions and obtain information in a variety of forms, from brochures to photographs, but they also were able to par take of several activities, from the library quiz to a videotape of the Hubbard Street Dancers. In addition to bookmarks, bro chures and a kiosk of photo graphs depicting library activi ties and services which the library has to offer, there was a slide presentation. Information was available on both the city and rural library boards, on how services are coordinated and on the library's "Friends" organiza tion. There were also brochures and photographs on opera house h i s t o r y , s e r v i c e s a n d programming. Information on groups affiliat ed with the opera house, includ ing the Woodstock Fine Arts As sociation, the Woodstock Musical Theatre Company, the Towns- quare Players, WoodFest, the Op era House Advisory Commission and the Woodstock Opera House (Please turn to page 18) Dac. 1st for St. Thom--, Nassau, San Juan BON VOYAGE // you Ve been dreaming of a cruise... well make your dream come true!
