McHENRY PLAINPEALER Section A Thursday, August 15,19>5 Page 3 Community Lakemoor-Lilymoor Crosswell family takes honors in 4-H The Croswell family of Lilymoor was well represented at the McHen- .. ry County Fair with its entries in the 4-H competition. Rusty showed diversified talents in many areas. First and third awards were won with his cochin chickens in the open class. His caged bird entries, a cockatiel and pair of love birds, received an A rating. He made a wooden airplane which gave him an > A for his child care project. Rusty has had models in the rock- - * et competition the past five years, and won a B rating this year; plus a Bfor chocolate chip cookies. He was upset with his mother at this point, as the recipe used was an old family favorite, so no measuring spoons were used in the poster ex plaining the cookie mrMng proce dure. Nor was'teaspoon used in the written recipe. The finished product was delicious, but the method used caused the B rating. Not to be outdone by her brother, Tracy took an A merit in cooking v. with taco salad. She was among those considered to show at the Illi nois State Fair, which was quite an honor. Tracy's child care project, given a 3 rating, was a party game. > ; And not to be outdone by her children, mother Phyllis entered a basket she had made, adorned with a duck made out of material, re ceiving a third place. The 4-H club the Croswells are -o active in is the Busy 3, out of Ring- wood. Phyllis is the official record keeper for this oldest 4-H club in McHenry County. Anyone interest ed in joining other young people involved with livestock, crops, home-improvement, career and citi zenship development may call Phyl lis at 385-2247 or the extension of fice, 338-4747. Introduce your children to anoth er world of activity. Busy hands and minds give youngsters a chance to grow and achieve and enjoy a rich er life. And you will, too. HAPPY DAYS Birthday time for Chris Biggs is Aug. 16, when he will have his four teenth. Billie Nejedly's day is the 17th. Neighbor Nancy Schuft cele brates the 19th with special wishes from husband Stanley and daughter Heather. Irene Thornton, a resident of Lily- moor many years, will receive wishes for happiness on her day, Aug. 20. With birthdays come the memories of the mothers who gave birth, so we reftiembef Irene's dear mother Lu Gravenstuk, who died six years ago. Tammy Horton also celebrates on the 20th. Barbara Nejedly of Lake- Bicyclist hit; no injuries An unidentified bicyclist was struck Monday after pulling out into moving traffic but sustained no injuries. Terry Arnett, 32, 2805 N. Beach View, McHenry, stated in a police report that his vehicle struck the unidentified bicyclist. Arnett said he was traveling east on Rt. 120 when a 16 to 17-year old male bicy clist pulled out from Don's Dairy Frost, 3102 W. Rt. 120 in frontt>f Jiis auto. Arnett said he made an unsuc cessful attempt to avoid the colli sion by slamming his brakes. Im mediately after the accident, the bicyclist rode away saying he was not injured. Arnett reported that the bicy clist's perceptions might have been obscured by the head phones he was wearing. Also, a van parked nearby might have obstructed his vision. Margaret Karas 385-4934 moor has her special day Aug. 21. Ia.-Mo.-Ky.-Ill. Carl and Jackie Stromley left July 27 for visits with family and friends, and just for fun. First stop on their 10-day trip was Jackie's aunt near Des Moines. Then, on the Salem, Mo. for two days at her brother's home, which was a bitter sweet time, as he is not well. The beauty of the area called the "Land Between the Lakes"-literal- ly between Kentucky Lake and Lake Barcly-was thoroughly appre ciated. It was hot, but air condition ing gave comfort, and Jackie and Carl relaxed and enjoyed what the area had to offer. On to Marion, 111. to visit with former Lilymoor residents Joe and Edye Fitts. Joe just celebrated his seventieth (or was it eightieth?) birthday July 27, with a big bash that was attended by several friends from our area. Greetings were sent back with Jackie and Carl. Home on Aug. 7 left a few more days of relaxation for Carl before returning to his 10 hours a day job. Happy to have them home was faithful four-footed friehd Daisy and . their family and neighbors. SAFE BICYCLING A concern for the safety of young sters on bicycles was voiced by Bill and Betty Kmetz last Monday. Sev eral times, bikers had been seen, or almost not seen, on Route 120 after dark. Evidently a motorist did not see the one later that evening as there was an accident on Route 120. The extent of the injuries is not known, but a local lad was involved. As a result of this, will bicyclists remember that they too have a re sponsibility when streets and high ways are used? Lights are required, plus riding on the outside edge of the road, without playing "chicken" with motorists. Drivers often cannot see bikers and pedestrians at night 'until too late to avoid an accident. Please don't become a statistic. Teach children the rules of the road, or keep them off the roads.
