R-B spikers rally to top Hurricanes Plaindealer photo by Sam Natrop Richmond-Burton's Nicki CoveU spikes over Julie Callahan of Hurricanes in Richmond Monday night. Richmond improved to 5-1 Marian Central during the Rockets' three-game win over the on the year, while Marian fell to 2-3 on the season. a stellar third game, breaking out from a 5-all tie to take a 13-5 lead, thanks to eight straight serves from Kelly Mathews. Nicki CoveU had four spikes in Mathews' string that either went for aces or were not returned. Kris Tas- sone served the game out after Mar ian rallied to cut the gap to 13-10. "Nicki kept the rally going when KeUy serving. Nicki was probably our most outstanding player tonight. Mary Zimmerman had a nice game too, with a few blocks. All in aU, we played pretty good. The second game was not too hot, but we came back nicely," Welch said. "Tom said it was the best they played all year. I knew he'd have them ready and up for us," she said "We're starting to come around," Welch continued. "With IS players who are all good, it's hard to find the right combination sometimes. But I'm starting to see who's playing well with whom, and what types of set-ups work best." Richmond will continue play Tues day night when the Rockets host North Boone. I Tuesday, September 17,1985 By Plaindealer sports staff RICHMOND -- It wasn't easy for Richmond-Burton's voUeybaU team Monday night. But Coach Jan Welch doesn't mind. Why? Because she's getting used to it. "No, it wasn't easy at all. But, it never is," Welch laughed. The Rockets did, however, find a way to run their record to 5-1 on the season, sneaking past Marian Cen tral, 15-4,3-15,15-10. "Marian's much better than they were last year," Welch said. "Three of his,(Marian coach Tom Faber'sj starters were benched in the first game, but they came back in the second game and beat us bad. "I've known Tom for quite a while now, and he knows me well enough to know I'm going to put in my subs in the second game. So he took ad vantage of that. "We didn't do too much well in the second game. Our serve reception was very weak, and we got way behind right away," Welch said. But the Rockets rebounded to play Warrior tankers win 1st By Plaindealer News Service McHENRY - McHenry High's girls' swimming team Jumped into the win column last Thursday with a 91-80 win over Zion-Benton at West Campus. The Warriors got seven firsts on the varsity level in topping the Zee- Bees. " : • v The McHenry jayvee squad was edged by Zion, 84-73. Sophomore Tracey Hoffman again led the way for McHenry, taking two firsts. Hoffman won the 100 butterfly with a 1:07.83 clocking, while taking the 200 freestyle in 2:10.44. Mary Geske was also a double winner for the locals. Geske was a part of the winning 200 team, teaming with Jennifer Debbie Holtz and Amy Hutchings, with a time of 2:12.39. Geske was also a winner in the 100 breast- stroke, crossing the finish line in 1:20.76. Heidi Gelwicks won the diving competition with 141.80 points. Shannon Brown took a first in the 500 free, with a 6:30.29 time. Hutchings was among the War riors' second-place finishers, plac ing in the 200 individual medley. Geske was second in the 50 free, as was Kim Kull in the 100 free and the foursome of Holtz, Kull, Brown and Hoffman in the 400 free relay. . The unit of Brown, RaeAnn Kryc, Robin Jensen and Maureen Cassidy finished third in the 200 medley rea- ly. Kris Panerali was third in the 200 1M, while Kull was third in the 50 free and Allison Heald third in diving. Holtz showed in the 500 free, as did Hiller in the 100 backstorke and Hutchings in the 100 breaststroke. In the 400 free relay, Cassidy, Erin Conway, Brenda Nelson and Paner ali grabbed third. The 1-1 Warriors will swim at Waukegan East Tuesday, before coming home to host West Aurora Thursday. And, not surprisingly, it was more of the same. Gary Gray's Warriors blasted Jacobs 5-0 in the FVC opener for both teams at West Campus. "Five and oh? Yeah, that's pretty good," laughed Gray. "It's like falling off a 20-story building into a cushion. So far, so good. "It was rather easy," Gray said. "I had heard Elgin beat them (the Golden Eagles), and we beat Elgin, so I figured we'd do it, but I wasn't so sure it would be 5-0." Melissa Rhode broke out of a semi-slump with a thorough 6-0, 6-0 thrashing of Kara Bradford at No. 1 singles. "Melissa played very well," Gray said. "She really played a good match." Beth Dimopoulus picked up what was probably the day's most impressive win, a 6-3, 7-6 (8-6) triumph over Val Morrison. "Beth had been out ill for a while," Gray said, "but she looked very sharp tonight. Morrison had a good year in the conference last year, and a lot of people were surprised at how well Beth played." Becky Marsh continued the Warriors' winning ways with a 6-3,6-3 whipping of Jenny O'Connor at No. 3. Warriors top doubles tandem of Michelle Landis hdowned Carol Schmidt and Michelle Plaindealer photo by Sam Natrop Richmond-Burton's Nicki CoveU (left) and Kathy Tassone go for a pass during the Rockets' volleyball victory over Marian Central Monday. The Rockets won by scores of 15-4,3-15,15-10. Warrior kickers fali to stingy Mundelein second doubles, Sue O'Halleran and Katie Prust blasted Linda Stevens and Heather Schmidt, 6-1,6-0. "Both doubles teams looked good," Gray said. "Me- C probably played the best she has all year. She and started kind of slow, kind of sluggish. But Melanie looked very tough. She's serving better, hitting stronger, with a little more authority. "Her being a lefty, we're trying to get her to use a spin serve a little more. Turn a weakness into a strength. She's improving, no question." Smith and the rest of the Warriors will face the season's stiffest test when they travel to Woodstock Wednesday for a date with the powerful Blue Streaks. The Warriors will then play at Round Lake Thursday. Saturday, the Warriors finished well back at the Batavia Invitational, garnering just IV2 points. "The competition there is very, very tough," Gray stressed. "We played some good people there." The Warrior points came at doubles, where Smith and Landis rallied to beat Susie Hernandez and Jenni fer Kuch of St. Edward, 2-6, 6-4,7-6 (7-4). The McHenry duo then lost to eventual champs Denise Lipinsky and Rona Eskilson of Conant, 6-1,6-3. In the consolation bracket, O'Halleran and Prust fell to Stacey Brown and Natalie Lishynski of Schaumburg, 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) in the first round, and then topped St. Ed's pair of Kristy Jensen and Kris Denello, 10-3 in the consolation semifinals, and then fell to Jo O'Donnell and Lisa Gille of Belvidere, 10-2 for the consolation title. Rhode had an unfortunate draw, getting stuck with defending champ Cindy Marcial of Belvidere in round one. But the Warrior senior won more games from Marcial than anyone else in the tourney, falling 6-2, 6-0. Marcial rolled to the title again. Dimopoulus lost to Ann Gallagher of Dundee-Crown, 6-3,6-4, and then fell to Tina Pepa of St. Ed's, 10-5 in the consolation bracket. , By Plaindealer sports staff MUNDELEIN - Five and counting. That's the number of consecutive games McHenry's soccer team has lost. It's also the number of consecu tive games the Warriors have been held scoreless. The latest on the skein is Munde lein High School, which handed the Warriors a 5-0 loss Monday after noon. The Warriors are 1-5 after a season-opening win over Antioch. The Warriors were without the services of defenseman Jerry Ben nett and center-forward Ivan Cvitko- vic, who has all four McHenry goals on the season. But MCHS coach John Sytsma said his squad still had a solid outing Monday against a strong Mustang unit, now 4-0-2 on the season, topping two squads which beat the Warriors, Zion-Benton and Elgin. "Actually, It was one of the better games we've played this year," Sytsma said. "Even without Ivan and Jerry there, we stiU did some good things. "We were only down 3-0 at half, held them scoreless the third quar ter, and really played well together. It was the best game we've played so far as a team this year. We were really passing the ball great," he said. Junior goalie Matt Roy continued to shine, despite allowing the five tallies. Roy made a whopping 35 saves, some of which Sytsma termed" spectacular." "Matt looked sharp again. He has really done a good job in goal for us. He jammed a couple of fingers to day," Sytsma said. "I made some player changes against Mundelein, we moved some people around," Sytsma said, "and it worked really well. I was pleased. We moved the ball in their half of the field more than we have in the last game or two. Mundelein has a good team and a good program, and they play a tough schedule. But we moved it around well, I was happy with that," Sytsma said. Sytsma also noted the play of sweeper Trent Castle and midfielder Steve Peter. Freshmen Perry Marke, Christian Ziebel and Greg Grant split time at center midfield, and also sparkled, according to Sytsma. Defenseman Aaron Milstein also stood out, his coach noted. "The referee told me at half time that we had to be more aggressive and go to the ball more, rather than waiting for it to come to us. I've been saying that all along, that we have to be more aggressive. With the lineup changes, although we didn't score, we had more opportuni ties, got more people involved in the offense, and that's good to see. "Overall, this game and the Crys-. tal Lake South game were two of our better ones. We're looking better all the time. "It's hard for the kids, they want to score, and it kind of gets them down, but we're improving aU the time. It takes time, though," Sytsma said. The Warriors will host a rugged Lake Zurich squad at West Campus Wednesday, before conUnuing in the Fox Valley Conference at Crystal Lake Central Thursday.
