McHENRY PLAINDEALER Section A Thursday, September 24. IMS Page S Nation/World 6 Firemen, trucks and policemen gather in front of the British Airways office in Rome on Wednesday after a bomb exploded, destroying Bombing hurts 14 in Rome By Paula Butturini United Press International ROME -- A Palestinian teenager hurled a bomb into a British Air ways office Wednesday, injuring 14 people in Rome's second terrorist attack in 10 days. The blast severely damaged the office, sent shards of heavy >plate glass flying at passersby and shat tered windows in nearby buildings. Police said a 16-year-old suspect, Hasan Aatab, was caught fleeing the scene and quickly admitted the bombing.. ; Aatab identified himself as a member of the Revolutionary Orga nization of Socialist Moslems, the group that claimed responsibility for a har^jd grenade attack on Rome's famed Via Veneto Sept. 16. That attack, just a short distance from Wednesday's bombing, injured 38 people, including nine Americans. . The group has made repeated at tacks against British targets around the world. It promised additional bits when it claimed responsibility for last week's grenade attack. ^ Fourteen people were injured in Wednesday's blast, four of them se riously, doctors said. Three of the victims were British Airways em ployees -- all Italian nationals -- and a fourth was a flight attendant's pother. » , {The most seriously injured was jtjrline employee Raffaella Leo- pardo, 33, who suffered a crushed leg and burns over most of her body. Another employee on duty at the time of the attack escaped injury because she was on a coffee break when the blast ripped through the building, located about a block from the U.S. Embassy. "I just have to thank someone," Liliana Frizzole Pomeranz said in a shaking voice as she looked up to ward the sky." Gunmen kill 3 Israelis By George Der Parthogh United Press International NICOSIA, Cyprus - Three gunmen demanding the release of Palestinian prisoners seized a small Israeli yacht on the Jewish holy day of Yom Kippur Wednesday, killed the Israeli woman and two men aboard and then surrendered, police said. An anonymous caller to the Agence France Presse office in Israel claimed responsibility on behalf of "Force 17," Palestine Liberation Organization leader Yasser Arafat's specially trained bodyguard unit. The PLO representative in Cyprus denied the men were from the PLO. The gunmen, identified by police as Palestinians, boarded the private 17- foot boat berthed in Larnaca Harbor before dawn and shot to death Esther Palzur, 50, during a fierce fight for control of the ship. The Palestinians dumped the woman's body, dressed only in a night gown, on the ship's deck where it lay slumped over a guard rail for nearly 10 hours until the gunmen surrendered. "The nightgown was torn and that makes us believe that she must have put up quite a fight before she died," poliofcf&id.; : 1 Police said the two Israeli men, Mrs. Palzur's husb^d, Reuven, 53, and Avraham Anvery, 55, were later found shot to death in the yacht's cabin, blindfolded and with their hands tied behind their backs. During the 10-hour siege, the gunmen demanded the release of a group of Palestinians intercepted off the Israeli coast last month while sailing toward the southern Lebanese port city of Sidon. The Israelis contend they were guerrillas on their way to conduct sabotage missions in Israel. Police brandishing automatic weapons crouched behind boats and shrubs during the 10-hour standoff. The Palestinian gunmen demanded safe conduct to the town's aiprort and a plane to fly them to an unspecified destination. ENTER NOW! By Helen Thomas UPI White House reporter WASHINGTON - President Rea gan. unmoved by a "Soviet propo- ganda blitz," Wednesday rejected Moscow's bid to link "Star Peace" -- its call for peaceful superpower ventures in space -- to his "Star Wars" missile defense system. White House spokesman Larry Speakes, responding to comments by Soviet Foreign Minister Eduard Shevardnadze that put a new spin on the Kremlin's denunciation of Rea gan's Strategic Defense Initiative. told reporters. "The United States has long been a major exponent of peaceful cooperation in space." "We see no linkage between the Soviets proposals of peaceful coop eration and research and the possi bility of effective strategic defense research, which both countries are conducting," the presidential spokesman said. He also told reporters. "We are not at all concerned about the Soviet propaganda blitz that has taken place over the last several months." However, he disclosed that a Na tional Security Council panel met Monday to discuss the "public diplo macy" leading up to the two-day summit meeting between Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorba chev in Geneva, Switzerland, start ing Nov. 19. Some decisions were made at the session, but aides declined to say whether U.S. strategy is being shift ed to counter Moscow in pre-summit public relations campaign. Vice President George Bush told reporters that Moscow's "very visi ble propaganda campaign... doesn't b6ther us." Shevardnadze, in a Tuesday speech to the United Nations Gener al Assembly, coined the "Star Peace" expression in a bid to por tray Moscow as a peace-seeker. Dip lomats saw the rhetorical flourish as raising the ante in the superpower P.R. battle. Reagan spent part of his day studying briefing papers in advance of his scheduled meeting Friday at the White House with Shevardnadze, who met with Secretary of State G e o r g e S h u l t z i n N e w Y o r k Wednesday. Reagan's Strategic Defense Initia tive. nicknamed Star Wars because of its reliance on futuristic weapons, is a multibillion-dollar project he says can lead to a missile defense system that would make nuclear weapons obsolete. The Soviets have branded the pro gram an effort to gain military supe riority and it has become the key sticking point in U.S.-Soviet arm's talks now being held in Geneva. On the arms front. Speakes under scored Reagan's call Tuesday for the Soviets to put their proposals on the table in Geneva. Widely circulat ed reports say the Soviets intend to suggest a mutual 40 percent cut in nuclear arsenals in exchange for a halt of testing of space weapons. Said Speakes: "The United States has had concrete proposals on the table since last spring. Thus far, the Soviet Union has not been prepared to discuss those proposals seriously or to make concrete proposals of their own." Should the Soviets make a formal offer, Speakes said, "We will study those proposals carefully and hope to make they make possible serious negotiations."
