Sports On the Sideline Dick Rabbitt wm;i griddershope to do same ' t iftSff(Sr2Sll2ltif!da«S McH®J7 High 'golf team broke a six-match losing streak with a win over Elgin Monday, 169-181. With a young, underclass squad this year; the going has been tough for ShlSnrfKS®* Now have finally won, maybe it is the sign ^ f° S?me foJ 016 Q* season. Saturday, the golfers will be at the Lake Forest Invitational, ilways one of the better meets in this part of the state. Coach Joe Schlender's 'little guys' couldn't match up with the big J 8er t€arn ^ast Friday night and went down to a 38-6 defeat. The Warriors were no match for the BUI Mack crew. Again, the Warriors had a tough time generating an offense. Missed blocks, penalties, etc., prevented the locals from marching down the field. The Warriors showed improvement over the South game, but when you are outrtanned right down the line, there isn't much you can do about it. Saturday , the Warriors travel to Elgin to take on the Green Wave of St. Edward. It will be the first football meeting between the two schools, and later on in this column I will pick my winner. Last Friday's loss to Central was made somewhat easier in the press box by some goodies provided by Karyn Althoff and Jean Natoli. S.I.H. would have had to forego his diet, and all I can add is he missed a good treat. Mike Shanahan's girls' swimming team really trounced Streamwood Tuesday night at West Campus, running their record to 3-1 with a nifty 116-55 victory. 1 understand sensational sophomore swimmer Tracey Hoffman broke another school record. Before she finishes, she may hold all the Warrior marks at the rate she's going. They will host Cary-Grove next Thursday, so why not come out andwatch this fine team perform. Gary Gray's tennis team keeps rolling along. After a rainout at Batavia last Saturday, the girls came back to win a Fox Valley match against Cary-Grove by a 3-2 count. It was the Warriors' seventh win of the year against only one loss. John Sytsma's soccer team Is still having tough luck. Tuesday, they lost a thriller to Wauconda by a 14 score. Coach Sytsma was well- pleased with the team's play, and is hoping to avenge the defeat next week, when the Warriors travel to Wauconda. The volleyball team Is hoping to win its first Fox Valley match at Dundee-Crown Tuesday. This is the chance for the Warriors to break the ice. A tip of the fedora to an old friend, 'Sonny' Katzenberg. His Aklen- Hebron Green Giants are 4-0 on the season, and he tells me they are looking for a state playoff berth. After looking at the remainder of his schedule, I think it will be awful tough to make the playoffs as an independent, which A-H is. Hie Giants host North Shore Country Day School Saturday, and then play their remaining games on the road -- all four of them. Pretty tough w ay to finish a season. Well, what a weekend I had i t Ume around. 64! That doesn't happen too often. Bet the other guy is biting hiS nails these days, but, in Ume, they'll grow back. I Babbitt: (SO last week, 26-8 overall) I'm going to break a promise and pick the Warriors over St. Ed's. This will reader the Warriors for the homecoming tilt next week. In the battle of bragging rights, I'll pick Central over South in what should be £T bang-up game. Jacobs has too much firepower for Cary-Grove, a likewise, with state-ranked Wood stock over Dundee-Crown. Also, state-rated Richmond over Valley Lutheran, although Valley won its first conference game in three years last week. Maybe I can get the Skyhawks mad enough to win another for Mike Roberts, so I'll pick Round Lake. Ahd Marian to win its homecom ing over Marengo. - Juzwik (4-2 last week, 19-12 overall) St. Ed's wins at home over an improved McHenry team. I like Central.as well, simply for consistency problems at South. Woodstock, Jacobs, R-B in routs. Johnsburg pumped for Round Lake, which lost to Dundee-Crown, if that's any indicator. Marian rolls. I know that I need to hurry to catch my suddenly astute prognosticating foe. Two games this week will help. If not, I'll just consider myself lucky he's not the vengeful sort. Or is he? Warrior spikes fall to CLS By Plalndealer sports staff MCC spikers top Morton By Plalndealer sports staff - CRYSTAL LAKE - All things considered, Doug Sijersen is a pret ty happy coach. His McHenry County College vol leyball squad took to the floor with the minimum six players -- the number needed to have a team -- and came out with maximum results. The Scots opened the 1965 season in grand style Thursday evening by whipping Morton College, 15-12,9-15, 15-11, 15-4, in a Skyway Conference match in MCC's multi-purpose room. "To be honest, we played better than I thought we would considering this is our first match," Sijersen said. "Morton came in with a 3-0 record, and had played some decent competition, so I didn't really know what to expect. But we weren't ner vous at all. It was the first one of the year and it was a nice (Hie. It looks like we'll be OK." The MCC coach said the scores don't really indicate the one-sided- ness of the match. The Scots dropped behind, 8-0, in the first game, but rallied to win that contest. In the second game, MCC was down u-4, and came back to within 11-9 only to lose 15-9. "After we beat them in the third game, they didn't come out with much in the last one," Sijersen said. "I think after they caught up to us (Morton managed to grab an 11-10 lead in the third game) and we pulled away that it took away any momentum that they had." The winners served 75 for 96 for a 76 percent clip. "I'd rather be in the 85 to 90 percent range, but we'll take what we can get," Sijersen added. He said that any student enrolled at MCC who wishes to play volley ball is invited to attend any team practices. More information can be obtained by calling Athletic Director Dave Hill at MCC. The Scots travel to Elgin Commu nity College for a Tuesday battle before returning home Thursday to host Oakton in a Skyway Conference match. Both matches begin at 5:15. McHENRY - Roy Chamberlain put it simply, but succintly. "The best thing I can say," the McHenry volleyball coach began, "is that we played very well, and hung in there with a very good Crys tal Lake South team." The Warriors, however, couldn't escape losing their fifth Fox Vallfey Conference match in as many tries, 15-3,15-9 at West Campus, as well as falling to 4-10 overall. "Smith's a good team," Chamber lain conceded.
