Ever wonder where all these new shades and colors come from? From Paris, Rome, Tokyo, or any other big city that premiers the latest fashion trends, that's where. New colors are typi cally introduced at pre mier fashion shows, ac cording to Robert V. Fritz, manager of the Advanced Color Styling feyJanA.2veriiia UP1 auto writer DETROIT - Since 1966 will not go down in history as one of radical change for the nation's new cars, colors will once again be brought into play to freshen up the carryovers and make the year-olds look passe. Revising the color chart is almost as old as the car business itself. Besides minor trim changes or model up grades. automakers Olds' Group for PPG Indus tries. a leading maker of colors and finishes for homes, vehicles, ap pliances and apparel. It takes about 1>2 years for those colors to filter doyn to the home interior-market. Two years lafer those colors appear on cars, and about a year later can be found adorning ar chitectural exteriors, Fritz said. So that means a new 1988 carVmay sport the popular colors seen in Paris or rlome this year. As a rule, purple and green cars do not sell very well, but there are exceptions. In certain shades, those colors have been making a comeback, notes Du Pont Co.. another major supplier of finishes to automakers like Gener al Motors, Honda and Volkswagen. Some shades of green and a grayer form of purple will be seen on some 1987 or 1988 mod els, Du Pont said. A special batch of crim son red has been mixed by the company for GM's highly publicized Saturn car. a subcom- pact due out bv 1989 or 1990. Other color trends in clude a brighter and cleaner red. tinted clear coats to give more d e p t h , c o l o r s t h a t c h a n g e h u e w h e n viewed from different angles, and the addition of pearlized flakes to enhance metallic finish es, Du Pont said. R e s e a r c h o n h o w those colors are applied or how they wear is also in high gear because of the increased use of lightweight plastics and special metals in new cars. Whether a color will sell or not depends largely on what tope of car it appears on. Char coal gray led the way for 1985 in the mid-size luxury and full-sized passenger car market, with white placing sec ond in both classes, a PPG study found. Black continued to dominate the sports car market, followed by -- what else? -- bright red. Dark charcoal, sil ver and light charcoal followed. In the full-sized and c o m p a c t t r u c k s e g ment. bright red was the top choice, followed by silver and light blue. The PPG study noted that silver continues to be popular in all vehicle categories, finishing no lower than fourth in any class. According to Du Pont, light red-brown placed first in 1984 as the most popular passenger car color. They are still compiling statistics for 1985. Color choices may also be tied in with eco nomic trends. Robert S. Daily, manager of Du Pont's Color Marketing Group, said the muted or subdued colors of the early 1980s have now b e e n r e p l a c e d b y brighter colors. Five years ago -- times of record interest rates, tight budgets and high inflation, neutral gray and beige cars were the big sellers Now brighter, more dis tinct colors have taken hold at a time when the general economy is healthy, car sales are reasonably strong, and lower interest rates are putting people in a bet ter buying mood. Whether the strong economy holds out or not. Du Pont says to look for the once popu lar browns to become more reddish, rather than the purple tinted browns that were the rage some years back lineup is varied Calais, Toronado, Delta 88 highlight '86 offerings Oldsmobile Division will have 31 models in 1986, covering the full- range of customer n e e d s / i n t h e marketplace.
