WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 6, 1918 ? i FRANCIS G. BLAIR Republican Candidate for Superin- tendent of Public Instruction PRIMARY, SEPTEMBER 11, 1918 Mr. Blair's National Prominence From "The Journal of Education", Boston, Mass., April, 1917 Report of National Department of | Superintendence held in Kansas City, 4 Missouri. Hon. Francis G. Blair, State Super- intendent of Illinois, at the Council of Education meeting on Monday evening made one of the most effect- ive speeches on Legislation versus Administration that we have heard in any convention in many a day. "It was an epoch in the education- al life of Illinois when Francis G. Blair became State Superintendent. He has accomplished simply marvel- ous results by way of starting things and awakening the kind of zeal that abides. Editorial Opinions Of The Illinois | Daily Press Superintendent Blair (Editorial from the Chicao Tribune, | October 17, 1914.) As Superintendent of Public In- struction in Illinois ,this official is constantly required to deal with the problems involving the important edu- | cation and social relations, and must be able to present to the people the ideals of public education which are | set by the statutes and traditions of ; | | J the state, and at the same time to harmonize all these matters with the | feelings, beliefs nd preferences of im- dividuals, groups and classes of many | sorts. For such responsibility Mr. Blair is well fitted by education and | experience. His insight into the educational and legal principles in- volved in the administration of his office, and the fairness of his ap- plication of those principles to cach concrete problem of school adminis- tration should secure for him sup- port in all parties and insure his re- election. Opinion of Union Labor From "The Illinois Tradesman"... | Professor Blair has kept the office free of political juggling and has' given the peole of the State of Illin- | ois a splendid administration. This | state is justly famous for its educa- tional institutions, both public and private, and no state in the Union ranks any higher. (From "Republican-Register." Gales- burg, Ill, Friday, Oct. 30, 1914.) It is the common opinion of educa- tors throughout the state that State Superintendent Blair should be re- elected. He has administered the af- fairs of the schools of the state with so much discretion and wisdom that with his large experience he should be retained where he is. (From the Springfield, Ti1., "Journal", Tuesday, Oct. 6, 1914.) Mr. Blair is a credit to the great school system of Illinois, in the build- ing up of which he has been most in- | i dustrious. Active, devoted to his profession and possessed of an enthusiasm which he imparts to everyone connected with the school work, he makes an ideal leader. He is also a good executive officer and his office has been admirably con- ducted from a business as well as from an educational standpoint. (Editorial from Kewanee Daily Star- Courier, July 31, 1918.) It is not often that a candidate for a state office can attract such gener- al and sincere support as that which is given Francis G. Blair, for whom petitions have been filed for superin- tendent of public instruction. The reason for this support, how- ever, is plain. Mr. Blair has seen toi it that his office has been administer- ed from the standpoint of a practical school man, instead of that of a poli- tician. He has brought the principles of fair play into all the problems of | his office and the people have not | \ been slow to appreciate what this; \ has meant. | | Chasifiad Aq, For Student Nurses Instruction in French and chemist- ry is offered to young women, who enroll in the United States Student Nurses Reserve.
