Inside the widow a man stands guiding with moist steady fingers the whirling mass of clay that bends and grows and takes shape beneath his encompassed hands. Without the window stand the curious watch- ers, pressing close to the pane and shading their eyes from the glare of the noonday sidewalks, following each movement of the worker and catching from time to time the flash of his white smile as he glances their way--the smile of the "Potter of Dempster street." His shop faces on Chicago avenue and there any time of the day he may be observed at his unique task of fashioning to order the exclusive ware which increases in demand as the work of the potter becomes known to fastidious collectors of the north shore. He is a modest potter and his creed is simple. "To follow the classic in line and shape, to give individuality to each clay form, to fulfill the desire of each customer, and to be worthy of his art." In the rear of the shop is the kero- sene kiln where once a day the clay articles in the "green" state are brought for their first firing. They stand in rows, tall, slender, artistic lamp bases, candle sticks, flower bowls and holders, Grecian urns, waiting their turn at the kiln, after which each one is decorated by hand. Colored glazes, underglazes, reflect- ing and non-reflecting glazes, and transparent glazes, in all the colors of the orient are added before an- other firing. Loveliest of all was an oddly shaped vase, of inlaid agate, covered with a transparent glaze which the potter calls his specialty. The art of J. A. Rapp, the Evan- ston potter, is widely separated from the commercialized art of the facto- ries where hundreds of articles are turned out from moulds every day, with no individuality or originality. Rapp will copy from any description or picture that a customer brings to him and prides himself on making no two articles the same with the ex- ception of duplicates. In a week or so a decorator and a firer will be ad- ded to the coterie of the little shop. So the potter smiles and nods his head mysteriously the while more and more vases are added to the 'tows beside him. White, 931 Chestnut avenue, the defendant, while delivering a load of coal to her home on Thursday, August 5, entered the basement, broke into a linen chest and pilfered a quantity of cloth- ing. He was surprised in the act by Mrs. White and in his haste to flee dropped two linen towels which he was carrying under his arm. Police were notified by Mr. White. Assist- ant Samuel Hoth investigated and found the dresses in Markiewicz' possession. : He confessed to the police the day of the preliminary hearing. WILL GUARD COURSE ! AT ELGIN ROAD RACE The Chicago Motor club has made arrangements with the 11th infantry I N. GC. for 130 men to guard the course at the Elgin races August 21. Another 150 men will be added from Elgin, Aurora and Geneva.
