WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, MAY 14, 1921 DRAMATIC NOTES B Mie X It is safe to say that if "Gertie's Garter" or "Susie's Shoestring" were forced to rely upon the north shore for their patronage they would soon would be delegated to the land where lost things go. ' The wave of dramatic interest which is sweeping not only the north shore but the entire country, is bound to react on the professional stage in a most healthy way. We can't get what we want on the pro- fessional stage. All right, let's do it ourselves and put on something worth while, and in a few years the stage is bound to get our idea and profit by it. The plays given by the North Shore Players at the Wilmette Wo- man's club, May 6 and 7, found a very well balanced program. There was "The Maker of Dreams", for fan- tasy, "Gringoire" for historical set- ting, and "Suppressed Desires" for humor. Some of the players had all the earmarks of the professional and all of the work was sincere and good. Miss Langworthy, Mr. Bellamy and Mr. Major showed skill in director- ship. The play "Honey", by Mary Mac- Millan, given by members of the Winnetka Community Drama club in Community House, May 11, was a for-' tunate choice especially as education- al propaganda. Mrs. Poff, Mrs. Mil- ton, Mrs. Dwight Green, Mrs. Goble, Mrs. Vernon Welch and Mrs. John Marshall, presented this play most convincingly. On Saturday, the operetta "Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves" is to be given by the children of Christ church in the Winnetka Woman's club. Reports from the rehearsals indicate that not only the children but the audience, as well, will have a fine treat. Another dramatic organization which is in the making is a group of 'Winnetka players under the leader- ship of Stuart Bailey. Mr. Bailey has for ten years been the leading man of the Hull House Players. Mrs. Laura Pelham, director of the Hull House Players, says, "Mr. Bailey is a splendid fellow and really an actor. If he had gone on the stage it is my judgement he would have made a def- inite success, which is more than can be said of most amateurs." Mr. Bailey will play the lead in "The Lost Leader", by Rennox Rob- b. A : : i inson, which is being given at Hull House May 20 and 21. All these amateur movements are worthy of great commendation. There is a striving for ideals that is most valuable, and there is a satisfaction in the art of self-expression which must be exeprienced to be adequate- ly described.
