A writer in California Fish and Game says that gulls when visiting the rivers and marshes of the interior valley of California, do not appear to be wholly scavengers or piscivorous. A California gull taken on March 12, 1912, along the San Quaquin river near Mendota, Fresno county, was present- ed to me. Upon dissection I was as- tonished to find its stomach filled witb common black crickets and three whole field mice, Hatch Silkworms in New Way. An improvement in the manner of hatching silkworms has been perfect- ed by Japanese growers. - Egg cards are immersed in diluted hydrochloric acid for five to ten hours just before they are hatched. In a fortnight or 12 days after the immersion the eggs are perfectly hatched, and worms that are stronger and more healthy than those hatched in any other way may be seen coming out of the shells. Absolutely Useress. While opinion is not unanimous in support of the idea, probably the most useless thing is the inside pocket which every tailor sews into a walst- coat.-- Topeka Capital. No man ever built a home or estab- lished himself in business with the money he had previously wasted. The business of this country is largely transacted, by the exchange of evidences of credit. A savings ac- count is a basis of credit. A man need not be stingy in order to practice thrift. He need only ex- ercise common sense and qui{ wasting that which he has worked so hard to get. Webster's dictionary says that thrift, economy, profit, gain and prosperity are synonymous terms, which is equiva- lent to saying that they all mean the same thing. It was the savings of the American people that bought $18,500,000,000 Liberty and Victory bonds, which helped to pay our share of the cost of the world war. It was thrift that. furnished the money. Thrift has cleared and broken every acre of farm land, erected every build- ing, constructed every railroad, opened every mine and financed every bank, commercial establishment and manu- facturing plant in the United States. Thrift has many angles. It can be made an interesting study; one that can be pursued in the market and kitchen, as well as in apportioning all daily expenditures. A weekly or monthly budget will serve as an aid to study. A gaudy $18-dollar silk shirt does not add one cent to a man's earning ability. If it contributes to his pleas- ure, or his vanity, or if it may be taken as his own estimate of his moral and intellectual measure, he must be graded with the peacock. a bird with less than a thimbleful of brain. "Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness" are not the only inalien- able rights of an American citizen. He also has a right to make a fool of himself by wasting his substance in riotous living or carelessly spending all that he earns as fast as he earns it; but he must not expect to be re spected or to deserve pity when ad versity gets him, The Latest. It used to be "love In a cottage," with the bards of long ago, but the modern hards have changed it to love in a bungalow. - EE -- Always in Stock Roofing material and Wall Board EDWARD HINES LUMBER CO. The sale and discharge of fireworks is prohibited in Wilmette and Kenil- worth by ordinance. The village has also been instru- mental in stopping the sale of dan- gerous and high explosive fireworks in Gross Point and other places in the township in close proximity to the village. An order to that effect was issued this week by State Fire Mar- shal John J. Gambier, who gave fire- works purveyors five days in which to get their stock "off the shelves" to avoid arrest and prosecution. It was understood the state fire official regarded the sale of fireworks as not only a nuisance but a menace to life and property in the township.
