SATURDAY, AUGUST 13, 1921 ; Anxious to Werk "Willing to fight; anxious to work", is a slogan at the Pageant of Progress at the Municipal Pier which has at- deal Like the Chicago Tribune's slogan at the first of the year, "1921 will reward fighters' tracted a great there. ', this declaration exemplifies the spirit not only of the ex-service men of the American le- gion, but of most of the men of the nation. Young men who have not yet become imbued with the idea of doing as little as possible and collect- ing as much as possible, are the hope of the nation today. Every American citizen, particularly 'during months which are immediately before us, should remember those two phrases: "Willing to fight; Anxious to work" and "1921 will reward fighters". Purging Baseball "Black Sox" or "White Sox" is the great question before baseball fans today. The acquital of the ball play- ers and gamblers who had been tried for throwing the 1919 world series, has put the question straight up to _ Comiskey and Judge Landis. Should they or should they not be allowed to play in organized baseball hereaf- ter? They have been tried and found "not guilty" and the presumption, therefore, is that they neither con- spired to throw the game nor actually threw the game in that series. But it is going to be hard for many baseball enthusiasts to be convinced that they played an absolutely fair game. Whether of not they are technically guilty of a crime if these ball play- ers did permit games to be lost or worn/ without profit to themselves, then they were as unsportsmanlike as-they would have been had they done it for actual money and had the state been able to secure convictions and confinement in the penitentiary. No matter what the result of the trial, Comiskey and Judge Landis can of attention | probably be depended upon to use these instances as a means to purge the great American game and make it clean for years to come. The Roman Holiday The death of a professional aviator who leaped from a racing aeroplane by means of a parachute at the Pa- geant of Progress in Chicago Sunday, lays fresh emphasis on the needless stunt performances of such daredevils who lend no advantage to the devel- opment of navigation of the air. It is a shameful commentary on the Amer- ican people that such Roman holiday attractions are condoned. Develop- ment of safety devices and means of escape from falling planes can be and is more satisfactorily and sanely de- veloped by other means than stunt exhibitions in connection with picnics, county fairs and circuses.
