Rid WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, DECEMBER 30, 1922 11 6000 ROADS SHOW IN GHICAGO S00 flammoth Exhibits January 15 to 19 So extensive has the road building industry become in this country and so vast is the future program of high- way improvement that the Thirteenth American Good Roads Congress and Fourteenth National Good Roads Show to be held in Chicago, January 15 to 19, promise to mark a new epoch in the nation's development. Both events will be held under the aus- pices of the American Road Builders' association, the oldest and largest good roads organization in the coun- try, and ome that has brought about so much Federal and state aid in high- way improvement. Approximately one billion dollars are now being spent annually in the United States for new roads and streets, a sum far greater than was spent for railroads during their great- est era of expansion and sufficient to build half a dozen Panama Canals. Notwithstanding that the road build- ing program is so enormous, highway improvement still lags behind develop- ment of highway transportation. The development of the automobile and the motor truck, according to highway officials and automotive engineers, has forced good road construction until it is difficult now to tell whether auto- mobiles are causing the increasing de- mand for better roads, or whether good roads are responsible for the increasing demand for motor cars. About $1,200,000,000 will be spent in America for roads and streets next year and about $1,350,000,000 will be spent for automobiles and trucks. Discuss Road Matters All of these questions will be dis- cussed at the Chicago meeting, to- gether with such subjects as methods of financing road improvement, safe- ty on the highways, progressive methods of construction, obligations of highway departments to the pub- lic, traffic regulations, results of test ing the various types of roadway, de- velopment of apparatus for testing roads, the use of local road building materials, subgrade designs, haulage methods in highway construction, time losses in completing new roads, road building in winter, highway maintenance, salvaging old roads, tourist traffic as a factor in highway ~dsvelopment, changes needed in mo- tor vehicle legislation, highway re- search and co-operation between state and county highway depart- ments and between engineers and Thirteenth Good Roads Congress, the American Road Builders' association, the National Crushed Stone associa- tion, the Midwestern Section of the American Association of Civil Engi- neers and several other organizations will hold their convention in Chicago during the week of January 15. Plan Mammoth Exhibit One of the features of the Four- teenth Good Roads Show will be a mammoth exhibit by the United States Bureau of Public Roads in which the government will set forth everything it is doing in the way of highway con: struction. An attractive feature of the exhibit will be a large model illustrat- ing the type of highway the govern- ment is building in the National for- ests--the road model being supple- mented by a colosal painting in oil to form a background for the whole. Models of bridges and roads at vari- ous stages of construction will be on display at the government exhibit, as well as new testing apparatus, numer- ous charts showing the progress of Federal aid work and a large assort- ment of road materials. High School Drama Club To Attend "Mr. Antonio" Members of the New Trier High school Dramatic club are to hold a theatre party the evening of January 3 when they will see Otis Skinner in "Mr. Antonio." Officers of the club selected at a recent meeting are: Cabray Wor- they, president; Darrell Ware, vice- president; Gertrude Smith, secretary. The club will give a party at the school next Saturday evening.
