DIPHTHERIA DEATHS, MYTH--SCHNEIDER Despite the fact that Health Com- missioner Schneider last week issued a formal denial that Winnetka was in the throes of an epidemic of diph- theria, the rumors still persist. Late this week came the report to the offices of the Winnetka Talk that three citizens of the village died at the Evanston hospital this week after being ill but a few days with diph- theria. The facts are these, Health Com- missioner Schneider explains: Ed- ward Seigel, Charles Siebold, Harry Henderson, Elizabeth Payne and John Krieter are recorded at the health department as suffering with diphtheria, Four are at the IIvans- ton hospital and in no danger. Miss Payne, a teacher in the public schools, is at her home in Highland Park and doing nicely. Above cases comprise the total number recorded this month. Two cases developed during the first week in the month, two were reported in the week of January 14 and one during this week. There is no evi- dence at this time of even the danger of an epidemic of diphtheria or of other serious contagion, Commissioner Schneider reports. One case of scarlet fever, that of little Jean Miller, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John S. Miller, Jr., was reported this month. There are also a scatter- ing of whooping cough and a few cases of chicken pox in the village. Oscar Rector, Veteran of Civil War, Taken by Death Oscar Rector, veteran of the Civil war, in which he was attached to the 96th Illinois Infantry, passed away Sunday, January 21, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Fred D. Barnes, 883 Elm street. Mr. Rector was born in Bridgeport, N. Y,, June 1, 1844. He was for many years a resident of Kenosha, where funeral and burial took place on Tues- day, the Rev. I. W. Corey of Kenosha and Rev. Francis C. Stifler of Wil- mette officiating. Mr. Rector enlistéd in the Civil war from Antioch, Ill.
