10 WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 24, 1923 . Germany Devoid of Hope Says Carleton Washburne (Continued from page 4) and to show you some of the remark- ably fine things they make. . Germans Devoid of Hope From Czechoslovakia we went into Germany, where we stayed two weeks. The French were just occupying the Ruhr during the latter part of our stay. The German people seemed de- void of hope. They felt that nothing they could do would alter their eco- nomic or political sittuation, and that they lay wholly at the mercy of a merciless enemy, France. They seem- ed to feel that their only hope lay in America. A railroad engineer at a junction one night when I stepped out of our train said to me, "Tell the peo- ple in America that our only hope is in them. We are hungry. We need their help." As I read the newspapers over here, I feel that the German government may be very culpable and that the French government is also shortsighted and unwise. But while the French government seems to be expressing the thought and feelings of the mass of the French people, I could see no relation between the German government's action and the ideas of the people with whom I talk- ed--economists, bankers, communists, teachers, professors, and workers. It may be that the government and people are more together now that France has been seizing more and more of Germany: but while we were there the people just seemed devoid of hope--plodding and listless; they wanted to get out of their country. Daring Education Venture In Hamburg we found the most] daring educational experiment, prob- ably, in the world, several large city schools with absolute freedom for for pupils and teachers--no program, no course of study, no classes and grades, no marks or promotions, nc The children simply go rules. to school, choose their teacher, and live four or five hours a day with this teacher, asking questions, talking, taking trips around the city, and somehow or other learning some reading, writing and arithmetic. At first there was utter. chaos in the schools, we were told, and even now there are some decided remnants of chaos... But the teachers and parents have had the courage to go through this for the sake of the ideal in their minds--they want to "liberate" the children's inner abilities and inter- ests, to give each child an opportuni- ty to develop freely according to his own natural bent. It was easy to find faults in what they were doing--the faults stuck out all over; but the children were undoubtedly finding out how to govern themselves, and were delightfully natural and affectionate. However loose their education may have been, these children were more likeable and childlike than any we have seen with the possible exception of the orphans at Stranoy Krnsko. From Germany we hoped to go to Russia. But Bolshevik red tape was longer than our time. Two months wasn't long enough time for the Sov- jet government to decide whether or not it was safe to let us enter their sacred precincts. Two telegrams from the Russian embassy in Berlin, a telegram to the Commissar of Edu- cation from the educational attache in Berlin, and a letter from me to Lunarcharsky, sent by courier, all failed to elicit any response. So we had to give up Russia. Experience In "Tips" We went from Berlin through the Balkans, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Jugoslavia, 'Bulgaria, and Thrace--to Constantineple.. The British at first refused us a visa to Turkey, and final- ly gave it to us "at our own risk " We didn't have time to get our Hun- garian visa before leaving Berlin, and came near being put off the border. and later just avoided having to go to the police station in Budapest. Constantinople was fascinating. We visited the school there that is using some of the Winnetka materials and methods and also went to Roberts college. We took a jaunt across the Bosphorus into Asia, and climbed a high hill from which we could look down on Anatolia; the Bosphorus wound like a river irom the Sea of Mamora near by to the Black Sea. faintly gleaming at the foot of misty mountains thirteen miles east of us. On the other side of the Bosphorus we saw Galata-Pera, the "Europtan" quarter of Constantinople rising on the hills east of the Golden Horn, and across the bridge of the Horn, the Hills of Stamboul, the old Turkish quarter, with its beautiful mosques. On other days we visited these mosques, saw the priests in the mina- rets calling the. Mohammedans to prayer, saw the faithful wash their arms to the elbows and their feet to the knees before entering, and saw them inside at their prayers. We stood within ten feet of the Sultan (or Cailiff, as he now is called since he has lost his temporal power) as he came in Oriental splendor to attend the Friday worship. We went to the meeting place, on the second floor of a rickety wooden house, of the fanitical Howling Dervishes, and saw them work themselves up to an ecstacy by chants and grunts and swayings, until they were able to lick red hot irons, carry glowing coals in their 'mouths, and be nailed through the cheek to wooden posts. There is no fake about it--we were within three feet of one man as the ice-pick shape] spike was pushed through his cheek (we saw the point pierce from the in- side out) and the spike hammered in- to a wooden post right beside us. The man stood there, his mouth open, the knob end of the spike protruding from his mouth, the sharp end going from hs cheek into the post, for five min- utes. Then the priest pulled out the spike and "healed" the punctured cheek, with his thumb and finger, moistened with his own saliva--sani- tary, wasn't it? The hole in the cheek was plainly visible, but there was no bleeding. Mr. Richards may not be able to perform such miricles, but I prefer his services, thank you. We took ship from Constantinople to Athens, and spent a couple of days among the ruins and museums. Then we crossed by rail and spent three days on the west coast. We visited a rural Greek school, and found it no worse than most of our American rural schools, although badly over- crowded by refugee children. If this letter were not already tto long, I should like to tell you of these refu- gees and the fine work of the Amer- ican Red Cross and Near East Relief --we saw a good deal o f it. . From Greece we came to Italy-- Venice, Florence, Rome and Naples. We hope to see Dr. Montessori in Naples. Then we shall have a week in Northern Africa--Tunis and Algiers-- before passing through France to take ship home. We sail from Harve on the French Line ship "Chicago" Feb- ruary 17.
