WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, MARCH 3, 1923 DEBUT RECITAL WINS AUDIENCE Karstrom Delights in First Appearance On Monday night, February 26, Adele Crenshaw Karstrom, contralto, assisted by Elizabeth Layman Ann- ing pianist, and Leonore Falk Harris, accompanist, gave a recital at the Winnetka Woman's club. Mrs. Karstrom, for the first time, presented herself to the public in a purely professional capacity and, in spite of the fact that it was a debut, she was well poised and sure of her ground. One did not feel, as is so often the case, that the first number was sacrificed to nervousness. As a foundation for the excellent work Mrs. Karstrom has been doing with Mr. Sacerdote, she possesses a full, rich contralto voice of great power and beauty. Her diction is excellent and she creates atmosphere with her songs. They are all well chosen and the program was a varied one. The second group seemed to find especial favor with the audience and Mrs. Karstrom undoubtedly did her best work in the Rachmaninoff number. The last group held two favorites, "The Gypsy Trail" by Galloway and "As We Part" by Ilgenfritz, which were also most popular with the audi- ence. Mrs. Karstrom responded twice with encores. Mrs. Harris accompanied Mrs. Karstrom in an absolutely satisfac- tory manner. She was at all times the accompanist, never a soloist, and her accompaniments were most artistic and a splendid support. Of Mrs. Aninng's playing, only the very finest things can be said. She is an artist pupil of Mr. Clarence Fidam and plays with great technical * skill, beauty of tone and an absolute feeling for her art. Her group was most enthusiastically received by the audience, and she responded with an encore. It is unfortunate that Winnetka does not avail itself of such a musical treat when the opportunity is so close at hand. PICK IS HEART ATTACK VICTIM Private funeral services were held at the home yesterday for Lawrence Mercer Pick, son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Pick, 445 Sheridan road. Buri- al was at Rosehill Lawrence, extremely popular in younger social circles in the village, passed away suddenly Wednesday, February 28, while at his desk in the offices of Burley and company, deal- ers in chinaware, at 7 North Wabash avenue, Chicago. Death was caused be heart failure. The young man, who was 26 years of age, previously had suffered with heart trouble, having been forced to leave the service shortly after he had enlisted in 1917. He was made assistant manager of Burley and company when his fath- er's firm took that concern over a few years ago. Lawrence was a student in the Art institute for a short time and had at- tended the University of Chicago. He was a member of the Northmoor club. Besides his parents he is survived by his brother, Albert Pick, Jr., and two sisters, Mrs. Archibald Lynne ahd Miss Dorothy Pick. Mrs. Joseph Lucchesi Dies At St. Francis Hospital Mrs. Joseph Lucchesi, of 677 Wil- low street, died Tuesday February 27, at St. Francis hospital, leaving a new-born infant. = Funeral services were held at the Winnetka Congre- gational church Thursday, at o'clock, and was conducted by Rev. James A. Richards. Mrs. Lucchesi was formerly Miss Margaret Michaelson. Besides her husband, she is survived by a small daughter, Virginia, an infant daugh- ter, born Sunday, February 25, and three sisters, Helen, Elaine and Ellen Michaelson.
