MEN HEAD EUROPE HIKERS North Shore Boys Will Make Trip A ten weeks' hiking tour of Europe for north shore high school boys has been arranged by Prof. Elmer E. Jones, head of the department of edu- cation at Northwestern university. The lads will leave Chicago for the Atlantic coast about June 22, and will arrive home during the first week in September. . The actual conduct of the trip will be in the hands of Bob Townley, a Northwestern alumnus and star ath- lete; Leroy Vernon, a senior at Northwestern university, and Rhys Thackwell, a former Chicago Tribune "L" ROAD TO EFFECT VAST IMPROVEMENTS North shore patrons of the Chicago Elevated railways will be interested to learn that more than $3,500,000 is to be spent by the Chicago Elevated railroads during 1923 on an improve- ment program, according to a report from company offices. Of this amount $2,400,000 is to purchase 105 new cars, the first of which are ex- pected to be received in May. An- other $496,500 will be used for the extension of "L" platforms on the north-south line to accomodate eight car trains. Eight car train service is to be es- tablished on the Evanston-Jackson Park line. All new stations north of Wilson avenue have been con- structed to accomodate eight car trains, but these cannot be utilized until express stop stations south of SEE THE Wilson avenue and those on south side are extended. The new uptown union station at Wilson avenue, the estimated cost of which is $155,000, is expected to be ready for use early in the summer. Express train tracks are to be con- structed between the Wilson and the Lawrence avenue stations. More than 1,000,000 lamps burn nightly to illuminate the 9,577 electric signs along Broadway and in other parts of New York City, according to a recent survey. The number of electric signs in the country is estimated at 250,000 and fifteen million electric lamps are needed to illuminate them. The larg- est electric sign in the country 1s studded with 20,000 lamps and the smallest uses but one miniature bulb. The average number of electric lights to the sign is sixty. 1559 Sherman Sat. The boys will arrive in Liver- pool about July 1, and will see the sights of London, before visiting the battlefields of Europe. Their hikes will take them through Italy, Switzer- land and Germany.
