WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, MAY 12, 1923 RATTLER FIRST 'HYPO' NEEDLE Says New Trier Biology Ex- hibit at Evanston Visitors to the Evanston public lib- rary are having the opportunity to see several unusual animal specimens col- lected by L. E. Hildebrand for the biology museum of New Trier Town- ship High school. Odd little notations on many of these objects give an added interest to the exhibit. Of the scorpion, for instance, which has been neatly mounted in a bed of cotton. Mr. Hil- debrand says it is not as dangerous as often supposed, being little more injurious than the bumble bee. How many have seen what they thought was a humming bird, and found it was something different? In all probability, according to another notation, it was a hawkmoth, such as is shown mounted. Calm shells which are used for making pearl buttons, and then for paving roads, a forest rattler, "its fangs the original hypodermic nee- dles," a soft shelled turtle, "very in- telligent, with neck which can stretch almost length of shell" a trap door spider, and many others are among the collection. Some are taken from points as near as Wisconsin and Michigan. In one of the cases is a collection of arrow-heads loaned by James H. Hammill of Oak Park, many of which were found in Evanston, and of re- cent date. One, for instance, is mark- ed "Hospital grounds, 7-12-22. Mr. Hammill will speak on "Why this Site Was Chosen," at the dedication ex- ercises of the Indian Village Marker, on the hospital grounds Saturday af- ternoon of this week. Athletic Test Given Wilmette Boy Scouts Fitteen Boy Scouts from troop 1 to > were given tryouts for athletic merit badges by L. T. Todd, director of phy- sical education in the Wilmette schools, last Wednesday afternoon. The boys were divided into three classes or weights. In each weight there were four athletic events--the broad jump, high jump, shot-put and low yard dash. Records which the boys made will go before the Boy Scouts Court of Honor which will award the merit badges. Rooms C and D of the eighth grade played off another game in the cham- pionship series after the tryouts.
