Under certain conditions they have real value. It is appropriate and be- coming that certain activities should be conducted with ceremony and ritual. There is a place in our lives for celebrating events of unusual significance. It is well that wed- dings and funerals should be con- ducted properly. We believe that the meetings of Winnetka Post No. 10 of the Amer- ican Legion will be benefited by the institution of some definite cere- mony for the opening of their meetings. The meetings will begin with a certain impressiveness, which will add to their value. It is not inappropriate here to mention the request made by the Cherokee Indian that the Legion use its influence against the aboli- tion of Indian Pow-wows. The Pow-wow is a time-honored cus- 'tom and, unless it has been abused 'or is objectionable for other rea- sons, it has a function as a tribal ceremony. CAMP FIRE GIRLS We are much taken up with the plan of the Camp Fire Girls to have a fire place in their room in Com- munity House. ven more inter- esting is the idea of each girl hav- ing an individual tile marked with her own symbol. Fach girl will feel that she has a certain material ownership in the room which is peculiarly hers. In future days when one of these young women becomes a national representative or even president, tourists visiting Winnetka will be shown this famous woman's tile bearing her own symbol. It will recall other famous inscriptions like Lord Byron's name on that school-room wall at Harrow and other similar records. Better go up to Community House and see these tiles on Satur- day, May 19, at 3 o'clock. ZOOLOGY If the mountain won't come to Mahomet, then, by jiminy, Mahom- et will go to the mountain. Any- thing to keep peace and get the two together. Same thing at the Country Day School. Said the animals, "If the children won't come to see us, then, by jiminy, we'll go see them". And the animals went. At present the following animals are attending the N. 'S. C. D. S.--boys, sheep, rab- bits, guinea pigs, and ring doves. If they only had a sky-lark they'd be ready for the appreciation of certain well-known verses on that ornithological helicopter. BETTER SCHOOLS Our north shore communities are noted throughout the United States, and, to some extent, even in Europe, for their high ap- preciation of the value of the best education of America's fu- ture citizens. And not only are they famed for their apprecia- tion but also for what they have done. If a student of pedagogy and school administration wants a fine course in theory and prac- tice let him study carefully all the schools from Evanston to Wau- kegan. With our population growing so rapidly, additions are con- stantly being demanded. Just now four new rooms must be added to the Joseph Sears school in Kenilworth. Sign Your Name When you send us a notifi- cation of a meeting, please sign your name! When you send us a com- munication of any kind, please sign your name! Anonymous letters have an unsavoury reputation. PLEASE SIGN YOUR NAME "ONLY ONE NORTH SHORE" A phrase appeared in a recent real-estate advertisement, em- phasizing the uniqueness of the north shore. The fact that some- thing is singular, the only one of its kind, in a class all by itself, adds tremendously to its Men will come miles and pay big admission prices to see the only orang-outang in captivity, even though in himself he's not much to look at. This one quality of being incomparable is one reason why the north shore suburbs are growing so rapidly. There's "only one north shore!" Travel from Chicago by rail, south, west, and north, and you pass through dozens of suburbs. The trains take you through one community after another, until you picture yourself a great nest of human beings adhering to the southwest corner of Lake Michi- gan. Series of suburbs on all available sides--but "only one north shore!" No wonder that all towns from Evanston north are becoming so thickly settled. Dwellers in these communities acquire a distinction from living in distinguished com- unique location. Others, living elsewhere, realize this fact. These are the only towns that border the lake and that ever can bor- der the lake. Of course there is a possibility south of Chicago, but for several reasons the south shore is not desirable for resi- dence purposes.'So, again, there's "only one north shore." Among ourselves, therefore, we may feel a little proud or for- tunate (Let's not talk about it, nor make much of it), because we live in Wilmette, Kenilworth, Winnetka, Hubbard Woods, or Glencoe. MAY MARKET Hasn't Christina Rossett lines on a market of some kind? If she were now living and in Winnetka it's very sure that she would be looking up rhymes for poems on the May Market on the Village Green on May 26. O, the fresh May Market on the lovely Village Green! The prettiest May Market that ever I've seen! Flowers and vegetables, Shrubs and daffodils, Come to the Market on May 26th. The above stanza is, as you will notice, partly free and partly tied. The two phrases that got us were "May Market" and "Village Green". LIGHTLESS CYCLISTS When you get through trying out this title on your mouth or- can see if you can figure out what it means. Frivolity aside, it means that we almost rode over one of these "lightless cycl- ists" last Saturday evening. We were Fording along at twelve to fifteen miles per, when suddenly we glimpsed a dark moving object almost touching our left front wheel. : A quick turn to the right and a narrow escape for a boy on a bicycle without a light. BIBLE TO BOYS They forsook the Bible lesson and discussed boys. The Men's Morning Class felt that the boys ought to be talked about, and so the men discussed the boys, as the boys, no doubt, have often talked about the men. And where could you find two men more capable of dissecting boys than Mr. Beatty, of Skokie School, and Mr. Davies, of Com- munity House. Mr. and Mss.
