' WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, MAY 26, 1923 23 BLIND STUDENT LEARNS TO SWIM N. U. Man Acquires Knowl- edge in 3 Lessons Teaching a blind student the rudi- ments of swimming in three lessons is the latest accomplishments of Tom Rob- inson, Northwestern university's veteran swimming coach. Under Robinson's tutelage, Carl Bostrom, the blind student at Northwestern, was able to master the crawl stroke after two lessons, and now, following the third lesson Carl has no difficulty in swimming the length of the pool. The crawl stroke is especially adapted to the blind swimmer because it permits the hands to be in front of the body as protection. Robinson asserts that this is proof that instructions, if followed care- fully, are better than any number of demonstrations. His sole method of teaching swimming is by instruction as to the movement of the arms and legs, and as to the proper method of breathing. Bostrom should learn to dive very quickly, Robinson says. "When a beginner is learning to dive, he always shuts his eyes before reaching the water and does not know what he is doing. But Bostrom, who has become expert in his sense of touch, will be able to govern his ac- tions once his finger tips touch the water," added the coach. 'Red Caps' Radiate Scenic Information Have you been '"scenically scintil- lated?" It's the latest innovation for tourists in the Colorado Rockies. No, it's not a "pass word" for thirsty souls seeking the harbor of synthetic sunshine coming from a moonshine distillery. It means, in effect: "Would you like historical, scenic and geo- logice1 information about sightseeing trips?" All winter long "red caps" at the station, hotel clerks and drivers of the tourist auto bus have been given a book course in scenic Colorado, then made actual trips to some of these spots. They are now in a position to more intelligently advise strangers about sightseeing trips. The scenic geography used is known as the "Colorado Travelog," pub- lished for free distribution by the Denver Tourist. Bureau. The prac- tical phase is attributed to Martin E. Rowley, president of the Rocky Mountain Hotel Association. He and his associates took the managers and clerks on some of the more popular trips. Others followed. So the station grip carrier, hotel clerk and scenic bus driver are radiat- ing and scintillating scenic informa- tion. : Cut Flowers Flower Boxes Annual Plants All Kinds of Plants and Flowers For Decoration Day Snap Dragons, Marigolds, Asters, Calendula, Verbena and all others.
