WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, JULY 21, 1923 HELP CRIPPLED CHILDREN, PLEA Teachers Told Hundreds Can Be Cured "You teachers," said Edna Foley, Superintendent of the Visiting Nurse association, in speaking before the National Kindergarten and Element- ary college, "come in contact with more crippled children than any other people in the world. Physicians and nurses are supposed to come in con- tact with crippled children, but we do not get them first hand but after they have passed through the hands of a great many other workers. One of our nurses discovered 15 crippled children who had never been under treatment and all of whom had passed through the Chicago public schools. Most of the children were cases of beginning spinal curvature. Some were such bad cases of round shoulders that they were practically deformed. The medical school inspec- tion of a large city like Chicago is so necessarily confined to children who have infectious diseases that these obvious defects had escaped their notice." " Children Can be Helped "For every child who cannot be helped," Miss Foley affirmed, "there are dozens who can be. For every child who could not be helped 20 years ago, there are 100 who can be helped now. We have taken care of dozens of children who were neglect- ed in good homes by intelligent par- ents because it was thought they could not be helped." In closing Miss Foley said, "I want to beg you all, as school teachers, never to let anybody tell you a crip- pled child is beyond hope unless the child is so mentally handicapped that he cannot be in the slightest degree appealed to. And the child who can- not be helped today, can probably be helped 100% six months from now. If you are in little towns where there are no physicians or clinics, hammer your state department until it does something. I think it is up to you to secure help because you have more influence with your children than anybody else in their lives,--even more than their parents." Quick-Witted Chauffeur Prevents Injury to Boy Alertness and presence of mind dis- played by Frank Livingston, chauffeur for the Sidney Corning Eastman fam- ily at 355 Melrose avenue, Kenil- worth, probably prevented fatal in- jury to a small boy who, early this week, fell in the path of a car driven by Livingston on the Kenilworth station drive. The boy was endeavoring to reach the station at a time when many cars were being parked near the station awaiting commuters from the city. He dashed across the drive and fell immediately in front of the Eastman machine. Livingston averted the im- pending accident by quickly throwing the engine in reverse. The youth hurried from the scene without disclosing his identity.
