WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, AUGUST 25, 1923 [| At North Shore Golf Links Ey Ira Couch, 19 year old Glen View golfer, last Friday arrived at a goal toward which he has been struggling for four years when, after wading through a field of 148 starters from many states, he won the western junior championship at Westmoreland and took possession of the W. A. Alexander trophy. The victory was gratifying not only because of the persistent struggle the youngster has made, but also because, when the next tourney comes around, he will be too old to compete as a junior. Couch's main obstacle was Emerson Carey, Jr., 17 year old expert from Hutchison, Kansas. The two tied over the 6,504 yard course in in the medal qualifying round with dup- licate cards of 76, three over par, but the Glen View star won this playoff Sunday when he rounded the course in another 76 to 79 for Carey. . Two stymies, at the short fourteenth and seventeenth holes, aided materially in giving Couch the title in the final match round. These blockades termin- ated what would probably have been an extra hole match at the seventeenth green. . Couch was the only Chicago or north shore player to win any sort of a prize. Bob White of Olympia Fields at times appeared to have a chance, but fell in the semi-finals. North shore players who qualified were W. Childs, Skokie, 81; J. Ford, Evanston Community, 82; B. Bernolt, Highland Park, 83, and R. D. Fall, Glen View, 83. After the first round of the two-day tournament of Women's Western Golf association at the Evanston Golf club last Tuesday it looked as if Miss Doro- thy Klotz of Indian Hill, who registered low score of 89, was well on her way toward ending the string of victories being gathered by Mrs. Lee Mida of Butterfield. But on the final day, with the course somewhat drier, Mrs. Mida forged to the front, added 85 to her previous card of 93 and took the tourney with 178, Miss" Klotz having to be content with 89-96-185. Mrs. Mida also collected a variety of other honors including the best cards for nine and eighteen holes. from the start Under Miss Klotz is the low gross scoring came Miss Dorothy Higbie, Exmoor, 94-93-187. Mrs. J. W. Taylor, Evanston, 191-10-181, and Mrs. W. W. Haerther of the same club, 193-12-181, tied for low net, necessitating another match, while third place in this section went to Miss Carrie Kuhnert, Glen View, 185. Mrs. Haerther won the Class A driving contest and Mrs. Em- mett Boyles, Evanston, and Mrs. Paul Walker, Glen View, tied in Class B. Mrs. Boyles won the toss for the medal. Topping a field of 160 members and visitors, Robert W. Ripley, president of Indian Hill, with a card of 80-79-159, Tuesday carted away the low gross prize in Exmoor's annual Jamboree the home club, with 160. H. E. Rend, Evanston Golf club champion, won low net prize in the morning with 78, the afternoon medal going to Constant C. Hopkins of the home club, with 79. Glen View, Onwentsia and Bob O'Link were victors last Wednesday in the three matches of the North Shore interclub series, Glen View winning from Evans- ton, Bob O'Link topping Indian Hill and the I.ake Forest team making a clean sweep of its matches with West- moreland. The Exmoor and Skokie teams were idle. Rush C. Butler and G. Malcolm of Indian Hill forced William M. Collins, Jr., and D. A. Matteson of Bob O'Link to the twentieth hole to win the toughest match of the day. Although Glen View won from Evanston, Howard Raymond and C. Murray of the vanquished team upset Peter Berkey and Kenneth Burns in a torrid struggle, 1 up. Results of the three matches were: AT INDIAN HILL--W. M. Collins, Jr, and E. F. Matteson, Bob O'Link, defeated R. C. Butler and G. M. Mec- Connell, Indian Hill, 1 up, 20 holes; F. Bursbach and C. Stacey, Indian Hill, defeated C. S. Williams, Bob O'Link, 6 and 4; R. D.
