The Wilmette Public schools, Francis Parker School in Chicago, and the University of Chicago Elementary school are co- operating in the investigation, per- mitting themselves to be tested and measured for comparison with the Winnetka schools, in order that the results of individual instruction may be accurately studied. Dean William S. Gray of the!Uni- versity of Chicago has been selected by Superintendent Washburne as the special advisor and expert in making this survey. He and Mr. Washburne spent many hours in planning the work this summer, and Dean Gray spent a day this week in Winnetka planning the details of the work with Mr. Washburne and Miss Vogel. Miss Mabel Vogel will handle the details of the investigation. She has had a wide experience with individu- al instruction under Frederic Burk at the San Francisco State Normal school, here in Winnetka, and through accompanying Mr.. and Mrs. Wash- burne in their investigation of Europ- can experimental schools last winter. Answers Questions The investigation consists of a num- ber of separate studies. answer such questions as these: Does individual instruction make a successful adaptation of public school classes to the varying needs of dif- erent children? Does individual instruction tend to increase the rate of progress of chil- dren through school? If so, is it help- ful only to the more rapid. children or to slower ones also. Does individual instruction prepare children for high school as well as does class instruction, or better? Is individual instruction more or less effective than class instruction in giving a mastery of the common es- sentials such as arithmetic, spelling, language and reading? Does individual instruction allow more or less time than class instruc- tion for self-expressive and socialized activities? Does individual instruction throw more burden on the teacher than does class instruction? Are children more or less attentive under individual instruction than un- der the old system?
