) WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 17, 1923 7 TRAVELERS AID IN FUND PLEA Helped 70,000 Strangers Last Year The Travelers Aid society, whose business it is to "help the stranger at the city gates," providing a represent- ative in every railway station in Chi- ago to guide the child traveling alone, the boy or girl seeking lodging or em- ployment, the girl drawn to the city by its lure, the mother with little chil- dren, the runaway, the bewildered imi- grant, the aged, the sick, and anyone who needs a friend is making its first appeal for funds. A campaign is scheduled for the week of November 19, Statistics show that 70,000 people were aided by the society in the last vear and the available funds for this obviously necessary and valuable ser- vice amounted to but $20,000. Contri- butions in any amount are welcomed, but the society prefers to build up a membership of 5000 citizens paying annual dues of $10. The work of the Travelers Aid society has touched every suburb of Chicago, it is explained, so that in- terest in its work should be wide- spread. It is sponsored by leading citizens of Cook county. Leading cities in all countries sup- port a Travelers Aid society. Subscriptions for the society may be mailed to S. J. Duncan-Clark, 228 Wood court, Wilmette or direct to the offices of the Travelers Aid society, Room 407, 53 W. Jackson boulevard, Chicago, Illinois. Triangle Club Plans Thanksgiving Dance Winnetka's young people are to have a great time this Thanksgiving week, as indicated in the announcement that the Triangle club will hold a "rousing Thanksgiving dance on Thanksgiving Eve, Nevember 28 at Community House." The celebrated 8-piece Vagabond orchestra will provide the muisic. Those who attended the Triangle's big dance last season will recall with pleasure the splendid work of this group of north shore artists, who are taking the dance-lovers in this vicinity by storm with their entirely new and almost un- limited repertoire of popular dance selection. : Members of the 'Triangle club are emphasizing the fact that that organiza- tion, as implied in the name, is inter- ested in three things--the promotion of amateur athletics, wholesome social activities, and aid for those who are in need. A few years ago the Triangles de- frayed the expense of placing one of its unfortunate members in a Fresh Air hospital. The club membership comprises a remarkably large number of voung people in the village. Its meet- ings are held in Community House. ode ogo oe ode ojo of ole oe ole oe ck oko bok Book oboh Bol ob ob obobo EX 3 Smokers, Attention! Memberships in the Red Cross were taken at the Community House FEx- change Wednesday and Thursday of this week, and the matter of enlisting support from the business people was placed in the capable hands of Earl Weinstock, president of the Winnetka Chamber of Commerce. Next Tuesday and Wednesday have been designed Red Cross Tag Days by Mrs. Walling. A large group of women will wait upon the public at the various stations on those days in the interest of the local quota of the Roll Call. About 400 personal appeal letters were mailed to residents of Winnetka this week, and a 100 percent harvest from the addressed return envelopes is anticipated. The Roll. Call, which started on Armistice Day will continue officially until Thanksgiving. Union Hymnal Chamber of Commerce Dinner Next Wednesday Members of the Winnetka Chamber of Commerce will enjoy their monthly dinner at Community House Wednes- day evening, November 21. A special program is planned which, it is expect- ed, will include an interesting talk on some question of civic interest. The Chamber of Commerce is push- ing its traffic observance campaign with great vigor. The organization two weeks ago voted to launch a drive in the village to secure better observance of local and state traffic regulations. A feature of the campaign will be a "label" message to be attached to car windshields calling the attention of the public to the fact that the drivers of cars thus labeled pledge to observe all traffic regulations. The organization; also is interested in stopping the dangerous practice of speeding delivery trucks, with reference to which complaint was made before the Village council at a recent session. 150 Children Appear in Plays at Skokie One of the unique features of Win- netka's observance of National Educa- tion week will be the presentation of three plays Friday evening, November 23, by the children: of the Hubbard Woods, Greeley and Horace Mann schools. The performances, to be given in the Jane Kuppenheimer Memorial hall of Skokie school, will deal with good citi- zenship, health and Greek mythology, and will be under the direction of Miss Douglass Whitehead, supervisor of dra- matics in the public schools. This is the one evening program of the Elementary departments for the semester, it is explained, and a moderate admission fee is charged. The boys and girls employ this means of pay- ing for costumes and play equipment for the entire semester, thus making the play production self-supporting. The children have made most of the proper- ties and helped in the preparation of their costumes. About 150 children will be seen in the combined casts next Friday evening. Announcement has been made of the marriage of Miss Ida Diveccio and Mr. Unberto J. Dini of Hubbard Woods, which took place in Hancock, Michigan, the home of the bride.
