. 6 WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, DECEMBER 8, 1923 LOCK UP HOME WHEN LEAVING Police Kept Busy with Un- locked Doors Significant in the November report of the Winnetka Police department is the fact that 211 buildings were found open by patrolmen during the night hours. Many of these were private residences, according to Chief Peter- son, thus indicating gross carelessness on the part of many householders in the face of repeated appeals from police headquarters for co-operation in dis- couraging burglars and prowlers by at least taking the ordinary precautions to protect the homes. . Records of the month show 30 ar- rests for traffic violations, 2 for dis- orderly conduct, and 2 for violation of the liquor laws. One burglary was recorded during the month. There were 5 automobile accidents, 211 buildings found open, 24 disturbances suppressed, 2 lost children restored and 36 station complaints, un- classed cases totaling 240. In the report Chief Peterson states the effectiveness of the new system of auto patrol in the different sections of the village was demonstrated on the evening of November 3, when three Winnetka patrolmen routed prowlers from the Stuart residence at 280 Sheri- dan road. The miscreants effected es- cape after a thrilling gun battle with the police. It is indicated in the report that the largest number of complaints entered by patrolmen, was in buildings found open during the night hours. Chief Peterson expresses the hope that busi- ness people and householders will prac- tice greater care in this regard in the future. A Miracle or Nativity play will be presented by the Dramatic club, {followed by orchestra numbers and the singing of Christmas carols, which will do much to accentuate the Christmas spirit for those who accept the invitation. The play is an old one of the four- teenth or fifteenth century dealing with the story of the Eastern star, the three shepherds and the three kings at the scene of the birth of Christ. This play offers an extraordinary oppor- tunity for beautiful scenic effects and tableau staging. This play has be- come a part of the community cele- bration in the town of Summit, New Jersey, much as is the Miracle play in Europe. After the play, which will be pre- sented from 4 to 5 o'clock, a light supper will be served at a nominal fee. Then from 6 to 7 o'clock, after some orchestra numbers, the glee clubs and Chorals will sing a cantata, "The Story of Christmas," by Mat- thews. Miss Irma Moschell of the New Trier faculty, a highly trained singer, will be one of the soloists, as will also Ridgeway Daggy, a New Trier student, and Miss Barbara Waite, a singer of high repute. Fol- lowing that, the Christmas carols will be sung. The school organizations which have taken up this affair, including its financial and working responsi- bilities, are doing it for the benefit of everyone in the north shore com- munity, and a record attendance is anticipated. Goodspeed of the University of Chicago, translator of "The New Testament--An American Translation." The addresses are attracting village- wide attention and Christ church is considered very fortunate in securing Prof. Goodspeed, since it is a well known fact that he has cancelled scores oi speaking engagements in the past several months, since his work, now published serially in many daily news- papers, created a distinct sensation up- on its appearance last summer. For Monday evening, December 10, Prof. Goodspeed has chosen the sub- ject, "The first putting of the Greek New Testament into English." The meeting starts promptly at 8:15. Every resident of the village is cordially in- vited to attend the lecture.
