16 WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, DECEMBER 15, 1923", KIWANIS CLUB TO PLAY SANTA Plan Yuletide Festival for Foreigners Through the efforts of the business men of Chicago, representatives of the Kiwanis club, Santa Claus and Uncle Sam are to be made one and the same person to thousands of for- eign born and immigrant's children this Christmas. The Yuletide festival is to be seized by the forward-looking executives of the largest Chicago busi- ness concerns as an opportunity to do much sound Americanization work. Centering round the twenty-seventh annual "Poor Childrens' Christmas Party" of the Volunteers of America, when thousands of the poorest and loneliest children from the foreign colonies of Chicago gather at the Volunteer's auditorium, 1201 W. Wash- ington beulevard, the Kiwanis club of Chicago will conduct a patriotic cam- paign in which the warmth of Amer- ica's welcome to newcomers from for- eign lands will be emphasized. Americanize America Albert Mathews, president of the Kiwanis club, who has been working with Colonel H. Smith, regimental commander of the Volunteers of America, says regarding the project; "Quite often the children of foreign- ers and residents of the immigrant colonies are left out entirely at Christ- mas. They are apt to grow up em- bittered, anti-social enemies of the United States unless they are made to feel that America cares for them-- that America wants them. They see the children of native-born Amer- icans,"' continued Mr. Mathews, "being feasted and treated at Christmas and they feel intensely forgotten. The Kiwanis Club will help to feed and | | entertain thousands of this kind of | children on Christmas Eve. The Volunteers of America here have been a century and we, the Kiwanis club want to add our mite to their noble anu worthy work." Gala Performance at Party It i said that the greatest enter- taindrs in the city will take part in the big Christmas party. Practically Aevery kind "of -an-.educational feature "will" be ptépared"in -a-most entertain- ing manner: and ih addition, large bags of.candies, fruits, nuts, and other necessaries that go to, make an hon- est-to-goodness © Christmas. will be distributed." Society Prepares Toys Not only will. bankers, lawyers, presidents of corporations, judges, merchants, and millionaires take off their coats, roll up their sleeves and fill Christmas baskets and bags, but their wives and the society leaders of the city will wrap the toys and prepare the gifts. Also, actors, chorus girls, musical comedy and vaudeville stars as well as working girls, will dress dolls and wrap the toys and gifts on their lunch hour and between acts. Every family to receive a basket or gift from the Volunteers of Amer- ica and Kiwanis will be thoroughly in- vestigated in order that proper dis- ¢oing th.s work for over a quarter of ; tribution may be made to those really in most need. Several north shore men, engaged in business in Chicago, are members of the Kiwanis club.
