Letters were Jonas H. Madsen, well known Win- metka and north shore real estate and amsurance man, passed away Tuesday, December 18, following an illness of al- smost a year's duration. Death was caused by a general physical breakdown. Funeral services were held from the residence, 548 Fir street, Thursday af- ternoon at 2 o'clock. Burial was at Rosehill. Mr. Madsen had been a resident of Winnetka for 50 years, coming to the village with his parents when he was six years of age. He was born of Dan- ish peasant folk and, by dint of hard work and an insatiable thirst for knowl- edge, achieved a remarkable financial success and a position of high respect and honor in the community. He was established in the real estate and in- surance business in the village for a period of 20 years. He was at one time a member of the Village council and a justice of the peace. Mr. Madsen was keenly interested in the history of the village and was per- haps the best informed person in the community in that regard. He loved to relate incidents that took place when the village was a mere hamlet and Indians still resided on the fringe of the white settlement. He boasted an ex- cellent collection of records and relics reminiscent of the early days of the village. : Mr. Madsen was also a lover of the out-of-doors. He was an expert fish- erman and hunter and in latter years spent considerable portion of his time in the woods. Mr. Madsen is survived by his widow and two daughters, Mrs. Howard E. Bowers and Miss Gladys Eleanor Madsen. G. M. Sheahen in Charge of Gas Company Offices G. M. Sheahen of Highland Park has been appointed chief clerk 'of office of the North Shore Gas company to succeed Wil- liam A. Brandt, who has been ap- pointed commercial manager of the company's offices at Waukegan. Mr. Sheahen will also be connected with the Investment department of the company. The holiday season at New Trier High school opens Saturday evening, December 22, when the hundreds of alumni of the secondary school will gather at the auditorium to hear a special Christmas program, and, later, enjoy a basketball game in the gym- nasium with the varsity pitted against the best team the alumni can muster. In fact, Saturday, December 22, has been designated as Alumni Day and it is anticipated that more than 1,200 grads will be on hand for the festivi- ties and enter into the lively reminis- mailed to all alumni whose addresses could be ascertained. It is quite likely many graduates have not been reached and the school authorities are especially anxious that word be brought them of the proposed holiday event. BUYS CHERRY RESIDENCE Frederick W. Copeland has purchased the home of George L. Cherry at 1082 Spruce street, Winnetka. McGuire and Orr were the brokers. Mr. and Mrs. Copeland will take possession at an early date, it is stated.
