T0 BE CLOSED Village Also Pushed Through Highway Project Institution of special assessment pro- ceedings looking toward the construc- tion of the proposed through truck highway from Oak street to Win- netka avenue and extending along the west line of the Chicago and North- western railroad right-of-way, was voted by the Winnetka Village Board of Local Improvements at its regular meeting this week. The board also decided to close the Willow street subway, giving as its reason for the action the fact that the cost of keeping the subway open would be excessive. It has been estimated that the cost of constructing a bridge over the railroad right-of-ways at Willow street after the tracks are de- pressed would be $250,000, an expendi- ture which, it is argued, is unwarrant- ed, particularly in view of the fact that all grade crossings will have been eliminated with the depression of the ptracks. Keeping the subway open would also present a serious engineer- ifig problem in connection with estab- lishing the grade of the proposed highway, it is stated. The next step in the projection of the through truck highway will be the calling of a public hearing, it is an- nounced. Winnetka was the first of the New Trier villages to plan a through high- way for miscellaneous traffic. More recently Wilmette, Kenilworth and Glencoe have agreed to co-operate in extending the route throughout the township. Wilmette plans to con- struct its part of the road next sum- mer. The Board of Cook county com- missioners has appropriated $100,000 toward the proposed highway, which, it is planned, will be a county aid road.
