WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, MARCH 15, 1024 17 DEBATERS WIN PLACEATN.T. High School Holds Lofty Place in Oratory as well as in Athletics HOLD CHAMPIONSHIPS Open Current Season Late This Month By J. R. New Trier High School's champion- ship teams are not confined to the soccer and swimming squads, although such may seem to be the case from ordinary hearsay. In addition to those two athletics another title-win- ning activity at the school is debat- ing, which, though it has not yet at- tained popularity to the extent that the two above-mentioned sports have, is becoming year after year more in- teresting. The first debate teams the school ever had won the championship for New Trier in 1922, when the issue was the Open Shop. Again last spring the debaters took the honors by defeat- ing all opponents on the question of Philippine independence. = This year finds the squad busy preparing ma- terial on the subject of the United States' entrance into the ILeague of Nations, with each member determined to keep the Suburban ILeague cham- pionship at Indian Hill. Competition Is Keen The coaches were highly pleased to see the growing interest in debate work among the student body. Last November fifty boys and girls turned out for the teams, and this unpre- cedented large number made elimina- tion. speeches necessary. The first of these called the preliminaries, took place during December, and reduced the aspirants to about twenty. Immediately after the Christmas vacation the semi-finals! were held, and from the contestants the. twelve regulars were chosen. These twelve are divided into four teams of three members each. Two teams will take the affirmative. side in .the debates, while the remaining two will uphold the negative. Of the three members on each team, two are to actually speal- on the plat form and the third is the manager. This system is being used for the first time this year, and from all ap- pearances will prove very: efficient. North Shore Window & House Cleaning Co. 10 Prouty Annex, Phone Win. 1994 Winnetka, Ill. By it the speakers are able to obtain help from the managers, who aid in finding material and in drilling the talkers. Meet LaGrange March 28 The first clash of the season comes ion Friday night, March 28, against | LaGrange High School. As has been mentioned above, the topic for the debate is: Resolved, That the United States Should Join the League of Na- tions. New Trier's negative team will stay here and meet the visiting af- frmative arguers in the home audi- | torium; the affirmative speakers will i~o to LaGrange to battle their op- ponents there. The second debate will take place April 25, and likewise will be re- ciprocal,--that is, the New Trier af- firmative and the Waukegan negative will meet here, while New Trier's negative and Waukegan's affirmative will clash in the northern city. A fourth member of the League is Proviso Township High school at Maywood, Ill. Although New Trier loes not debate Proviso, the latter's 'ecord will effect the standing of all four schools. Due to the desire of each school to win it is certain that the encounters will be lively. Excitement will abound. even though it is not the noisy kind which is found at an athletic contest.
