POPPY DAYS TO | y wy ~~ WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, MAY 3, 1924 3 BE MAY 29-30 'Winnetka Post Calls Upon Residents to Swell Poppy Fund This Year BOOSTS SERVICE WORK Funds Go to Help Unfor- tunate Ex-Fighters Winnetka Post of the American Le- gion, Department of Illinois, is cooper- ating with the National and State head- quarters in the sale of poppies, on Na- tion Poppy Days, May 29 and 30, and it is hoped that every man, woman and child will wear a poppy on these days in remembrance of the thousands who have "Gone West" as the result of the World War. All money derived from the sale will be devoted exclusively to Service Work. The Service department of the Ameri- can Legion is continually called upon to make expenditures along this line which tax its resources, it.is explained, and as their only means of raising the money to carry on this work is from this source, they are making every effort to assure a large sale this year. For Service Work The Service department of the Ameri- con Legion in this state alone has been responsible for collecting over $2,500,000 in claims for ex-service men. They have placed more than 20,000 men in employment, besides interceding for many unfortunate ex-service men who have been in trouble in some way or other. They have taken care of the families of hundreds of men while their claims against the government were be- ing adjusted. Many of these families H. C. ANDERSON Contractor and Builder 952 SPRUCE STREET, Phone Winnetka 1468 would have become County charges, as the physical condition of the men would not permit them to work. Fighting the just claims of all ex-service people is the first work of the American Legion. Every Flower Labeled Because of a prejudice which exists in ceria.n states and localities against the sale of poppies as the result of undigni- fied and ill-advised selling campaigns conducted in the past by other organiza- tions, it has been decided that all poppies sold under the auspices of the American Legion will have a sticker bearing the words, "The American Legion, Depart- ment of Illinois." This will guarantee to each purchaser that he is not being victimized by irresponsible agencies. The Poppy is the official flower of the American Legion. Kenilworth to Witness Exhibit of Gymnastics The annual exhibition of the gymnas- tic classes at the Community House at Kenilworth will be held Saturday eve- ning, May 3, at 7:30 o'clock. At this time the boys and girls classes will dem- onstrate their various gymnastic activi- ties, while the Boy Scouts and 'Camp Fire Girls will also have a place on the program. LAKE SHORE TERRACE IN FORMAL OPENING Saturday, May 3, will be a time of festivity at the Lake Shore Terrace, Sheridan road =~ and Chestnut street, Wilmette, when Fred Miller, the genial proprietor, will invite the public of the north shore to inspect his newly re- 'modeled dining rooms. With the opening of the beautifully appointed rooms will be observed, also, the formal opening of the summer sea- son at the Terrace. Mr. Miller, who came to the north shore about six years ago, was literal- ly raised in the hotel and restaurant business. His experience has included affiliation with prominent German, English and American hostelries and restaurants, among them the Wal- dorf-Astoria in New York and the famous Fdelweiss restaurant at Chi- cago. : He possesses the happy faculty of anticipating the desires of the discrim- inating public and has gained a wide circle of friends on the north shore.
