Approximately $50,000 has been pro- vided by the sanitary district of Chi- cago for the removal of excess dirt from the canal bank and to build up the roadbed and $800,000 to pave a 54-foot heavy duty concrete road from Devon avenue, Chicago, to West Rail- road avenue in Evanston, a distance of about four miles. From Evanston it will join a high- way proposed to be built by the vil- lages of Wilmette, Kenilworth, Win- netka and Glencoe, in cooperation with the Cook county highway depart- ment. This will be an additional six miles of highway and will continue north to the Green Bay road north of Glencoe, on the west side of the North Western railway tracks. Provides 40.Foot Road "While the 6-mile highway north of Evanston will be made up of four in- dividual contracts, officials of the vil- lages involved have virtually agreed on the location and width of the road- way, so that it will provide an arrow line traffic way of uniform width and construction for the entire distance," says the Illinois Motorist in the cur- rent number. "The road will be built of reinforced concrete of the most modern design and will be 40 feet wide. "The roadway as planned," the arti- cle continues, "will not only relieve Sheridan road of at least one-third of its congested traffic, but will serve a new and rapidly growing territory to the west of the North Western rail- way in all of the villages tributary to the highway. At least 10,000 vehicles per day will benefit by the new high- way that will shorten the time be- tween Glencoe and Chicago by at least 30 minutes." According to present plans, traffic will be segregated on the boulevard, so that fast traffic will not be hindered by slower moving vehicles or trucks. The two inner lanes are to be designated for through bound, high speed passenger vehicles. "Experience in other cities where similar schemes are in effect brings out the fact that by routing traffic in this manner, the effective width of roadway is increased by one-third of the total width."
