A WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, JULY 5, 1924 "HALE WINS AT TENNIS MATCH Indian Hill Net Play at Top Interest © George Hale won the finals in the "Ball Chasers" tennis tournament for 'boys at the Indian Hill club, Wednes- .day afternoon, from Bayne O'Brien, in 'two straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. In the girls' division the final round 'will be played off between Jean {O'Brien and Elinor Coffin. J During the past week the clay court artists have been showing some stellar work at the Indian Hill club. Some of the matches have brought out re- 'markable playing among the children entered in this division (12 years and under). They cover the courts like veterans and show professional skill on serves and returns. In the first round of the boys' divi- sion E. Price, G. Hale, H. Lachner, M. McConnell, S. Lynch were the winners over I. S. Miller, H. Butz, H. Bou- scaren, William Butz, and I. Stuart. E. Price, G. Hale, M. McConnell and Bayne O'Brien were the victors in the second round. And George Hale and Bayne O'Brien topped the list in the semi-finals, with George nosing out Bayne in the finals. . The first round of the girls' division ended with Mary Prindeville, Elinor Coffin, Margaret Hamill, Adalaide Ball, Anne Palmer and Jean O'Brien victorious over Virginia Winston, Helen Fulton, Henrietta Boal, Jean McConnell, Katherine Klotz and Pheobe Massey. Adelaide Atkin, Elinor Coffin, Mar- garet Hamill and Jean O'Brien won their sets in the second round. The semi-finals left Elinor Coffin and Jean O'Brien undefeated. Miss Murphy Gets Off Car Backwards--!7x, etc. Josephine Murphy, prominent among the fair members of the official family at the Village hall, disregarded the tramway rule of not getting off cars backwards one day this week with the result that she has been receiving messages of sympathy from her as- sociates at the municipal offices. Miss Murphy, so the story goes, journeyed to the village post office the other day under the kindly auspices of Mr. Bohnen and his trusty flivver. Tn alighting from the machine Miss Murphy--did it backwards--and, as 'Mr. Bohnen started the 'car, described wa: perfect whirligig that terminated in "complete disaster. Miss Murphy is doing nicely, thank you. Council Plans Technical Changes in Zone Measure An ordinance was introduced at the Village council meeting Tuesday eve- ning, amending several sections of the zoning ordinance largely with refer- ence to details of administration. These changes have been recommend- ed by the board of appeals as a result of its experiences during the past two years, since the ordinance was adopted. No changes in district boundaries or classification or use of property are contemplated in the amended ordi- nance. . > " Frank Borovicka Let me give you an es- timate on your FLOW- ER BOX PLANTING. Charles P. Root of the high- way department made an investigation several days ago and is making a complaint to local authorities in those cases where the enterprising merchants have placed these signs on their own property, while in those cases where the right of way has been used the complaints are registered with the state highway department. It is the contention of the motor club that these signs tend to make motorists callous to legitimate signs and thus promote accidents. Matrimony Bound Pair Helped by Our "C. T." A. W. Johnson and Miss Grace Olsen of Chicago, late last week de- cided to embark on the alleged stormy matrimonial seas, and forthwith es- sayed a trip to Winnetka and Magi- strate C. T. Northrop's court where the knot was tied. (no pun inferred). It all happened on Saturday, June 28, and the ceremony was witnessed by the kindly disposed staff of the Heinsen and Clark real estate offices just across the partition from the magistrate's domain. North Shore Boys Enter Culver Training School Stoddard J. Small, son of Mr. and Mrs. John D. Small of 411 Maple ave- nue, Wilmette, left the village this week to enter the Culver summer school where he will enroll in the woodcrafter department. John Roos, son of Mr. and Mrs. John H. Roos of Winnetka, and Her- bert Hurd, son of Mr. and Mrs. N. L. Hurd, also of Winnetka, went to Cul- ver this week to enter the naval school. The course of training covers eight weeks.
