Goldthorpe, of Minneapolis, a graduate of Hamline 'university in 1920, and now taking further work in statis- tics at the University of Minnesota, has been appointed registrar of North- western univergity, it was announced Tuesday, July 8. Mr. Goldthorpe takes the place of Frederick I. Kerr, who re- cently accepted the position of assistant to the president and registrar of the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, that state. Registrar Goldthorpe, who started work Tuesday at Northwestern in Evanston, was born in Missoula, Montana, and besides attending Ham- line university and the University of Minnesota, taught in the history depart- ment of west high school at Minneap- olis for two years. During the last six months he has been statistician in a general survey of Northwestern univer- sity's various schools and departments. Mr. Goldthorpe's master's work at the University of Minnesota is well along and he will get his M.A. degree next December from that institution. His work for the Ph. D., also in pro- gress, will be continued until he wins the coveted "doctor's degree" somewhat later. Statistics is now his forte, he says. "During the last half-year Mr. Gold- thorpe has been famjilarizing himself with the various schools and departments of Northwestern university," com- mented Dean R. A. Kent, head of the college of liberal arts. "In his capacity of statistician in the university depart- ment survey he has gained useful infor- mation and we know that he will be a valuable addition to the staff of North- western." R. 0. T. C. COMMANDER VISITS AT EVANSTON Major Robert E. Jones, infantry, U. S. A, who has been appointed com- mander of the R. O. T. C. and profes- sor of military science and tactics at Northwestern university, stopped off in Evanston on Wednesday, July 2, on his way to Camp Custer for the summer. Major Jones fills the place left vacant by the transfer of Major Louis T. Byrne, who has been at Northwestern for three years. The new commanding officer at Northwestern has a long record of ser- vice in the infantry. He first joined the army fifteen years ago and was ser- ving in the Philippines at the outbreak of the war. He was unable to get to France before the end of the war, but after the Armistice, he was detailed with the army of occupation for one year. From 1920 to 1923 he was in- structor in French at West Point. Major Jones for the past year has been pursuing a post-graduate course in military science at Fort Ieavenworth. He leaves Evanston this week, but will return early in September to assume the duties of his new office at North- western at that time. PROMINENT SURGEON BUYS GLENCOE HOME It is of interest to the entire north shore community that Dr. Everett Woods Maechtle, one of the most suc- cessful young surgeons of Milwaukee, has recently purchased a beautiful home in McGuire and Orr's "Skokie Heights" addition at the corner of Bluff and Green Bay road and, with his family, has now become a resident of Glencoe. Dr. Maechtle has been, for the past ten years, the physician and surgeon in charge of the industrial work of Allis Chalmer's Manufacturing com- pany and thirty other neighboring plants and has made this move to take place on the faculty of the North- western University Medical school of which he is a graduate in the class of 1911. It is possible that the doctor may locate his office, in the early fall, in this community. Mrs. Maechtle has been prominent- ly identified with the work of the Woman's Club of Wisconsin and is now president of the Milwaukee County Federation. Catholic Groups to Hold Outing at Glenview Soon The Ouilmette Council, Knights of Columbus and Ouilmette Court, Daughters of America, will hold a joint basket picnic Sunday, August 10, in the Glenview Forest Preserves, it was announced this week. There will be special awards for winners in the various athletic and field events scheduled for the day's program. CIVIC ASSOCIATION The next regular stated meeting of the North Shore Civic association is scheduled to be held Monday evening, July 14, at 8 o'clock in Odd Fellows hall, Wilmette. A speaker of promin- ence has been secured for this meet- ing, it is announced. 1 NS Pg f L -- rT ) died N 2 i or S A BB [sisi 0} Rx ~ ' i 3 ply BL 12 we DF rl = fy ea. p=] --- --J =F at T 3 = - y i ) --_-- : : : @ Do You Pay Yourself Anything?
