DEVENISH The kitchen, being the workroom of the house, requires every aid and facility afforded by electric service. For which reason, particular atten- tion should be given to kitchen wir- ing and careful thought expended in planning the facilities for the most effective use of the service. This one room, the kitchen, is essentially a place where practical and utili- tarian considerations. are, .or should be, of prime importance. It should be made, above all else, a room in which the work can be carried on with least possible effort. Since kitchen work is more or less systematized and localized, it is im- portant, therefore, to have the kitchen lights located at exactly the right points. Every corner of the room should be illuminated, usually from one or two properly placed ceiling lights. In addition, there should be a light over the sink, one over the range and another light so located as to illuminate the kitchen cabinet or principal working table or bench. These lights, in fixed positions, should he fitted with suitable diffusing glass- ware and controlled by conveniently located wall switches. Cupboard lights should not be overlooked and should advisably be controlled by contact switches in the frame of the door-- on the hinge side. While the well-lighted kitchen is conducive to dispatch and efficiency in kitchen work, the many electrical devices now available for lightening the work must be considered and provisions made for their use. These vary from the electric range, refrig- erator and dishwasher, to the kitchen aid and small electrical appliances. Electric Range Comes First The electric range is a permanent installation, requiring a special wir- ing, so it is not apt to be overlooked. not necessarily entailed, a "conveni- ence outlet" should be arranged for in proximity to the refrigerator. Out- let provisions for these major appli- ances should be provided, even though their immediate use may not seem feasible. In the case of the many smaller appliances, which have become daily necessities in the modern home, the benefits to be derived from their use are in no small part dependent upon the provisions made for them, that is, upon the presence of proverly placed "convenience outlets." These kitchen aids can frequently be em- ploved concurrently and there should be a sufficient number of locations where the appliances can be used to avoid unnecessary delays and to ex- pedite kitchen work by providing the utmost flexibility in operation. As the portable appliances can be connected to 'any "convenience out- let," it is necessary to have a clear idea of what appliances will prove most useful in the kitchen. To many, the electric dishwasher ranks as one of the most desirable of kitchen ap- pliances, as it is a fairly large ap- pliance, it is well to assign it to some definite location, convenient to hot water supply, where unnecessary steps may be avoided from pantry or dining room. A duplex "con- venience outlet," about waist high will serve admirably for the dish- washer, the second receptacle of the outlet being available for a plate warmer or an electric fireless cooker. For the Electric Iron . szcond duplex "convenience out- iet," also waist high, will prove use- ful for other electrical appliances in- cluding the electric iron. This latter electrical aid may properly belong in the laundry, but it has become so gen- erally indispensable that an additional one is found in every well-equipped kitchen. Wiring with suitable outlets should also be provided for a ventilating fan set in the wall. This fan not only serves to keep the kitchen free from cooking odors but can be used for ventilating the whole house, by the simple process of switching it on after opening upstairs windows and closing doors and windows downstairs. Use for Pictures in Unexpected Corners In this day of imaginative furnish- ing of hcmes, and wide-spread good taste in the accessories of the house, a most charming use of pictures is in some of the little unexpected corners of the house. The interest and beauty of pictures has placed upon them many tasks in making attractive those corners and accessories. For instance, color re- productions are mounted on fire screens; they are placed in the frame of the clock, below the face; they adern lamp-shades and the tops of ornamental table-boxes; they suddenly brighten a spot at the back of some shelf, or a niche in a cabinet. Reproductions thus mounted should be carefully pasted on their back- ground, and then shellacked, to pre- serve them for wear.
